Not a normal member here, I just registered because I had the same problem and after much fiddling, found the solution. I know this thread is very old, but since the answer hasn't been provided and is next to impossible to find online or in a service manual I wanted to pay it forward and post it for the next guy...

The Aveo sunroof does not have a position switch. I think it uses a timer or a rheostat inside the sunroof motor itself. If it is not stopping automatically when closing, then the sunroof control unit (SCU) needs to be reset, re-initialized, or re-synchronized (however you want to call it, seen it each way).

To reset the SCU and sunroof motor, follow the procedure below.

      1. Remove the headliner.
      2. Remove the sunroof motor by removing the 3 torx head screws. Leave the SCU and the motor electrical connectors plugged in.
      3. With the sunroof switch, press the Up button (tilt open) and keep pressed until the motor stops by itself.
      4. Again, with the sunroof switch, press the Down button (slide back) and keep pressed until the motor stops by itself.
      5. Once again, with the sunroof switch, press the Up button (slide close) and keep pressed until the motor stops by itself.
      6. The sunroof motor has now been reset.
      7. Re-install the sunroof motor and make sure that the it is now operating it's supposed to and stopping automatically.
      8. Re-install the headliner.

Hope this helps the next DIYer. Cheers!
