timing belt problem. is my motor permanently damaged?

The mechanic says my 2004 Aveo timing belt is not working. It didn't tear. At first he said the timing belt can be replaced, he then told me that Aveos have a tendency to damage the motor and that I should try calling my dealership to see if I can get something out of them in case these vehicles were recalled for this problem (I bought it used, so I doubt I'll get anything).

He doesn't want to change my belt only to find out that my motor was damaged and that I'll need further repairs. Should I just sell my car at a junkyard?

My car stopped working while driving at 25mph. I just went to a store located one block away from my house. On the way back, I heard the timing belt doing a strange noise, that's what we believe it was the timing belt messing my motor.

Wow, does it run at all at the moment?

It tries to start but it doesn't. The battery works.

All the recall information for Aveos are in a sticky in this section of the forum and the 2004 only list an issue with the seat belts. I found a thread on another forum Timing Belt Warning Issue for all Aveo Owners - Chevrolet Forum - Chevy Enthusiasts Forums where there are many people who had serious engine damage because of timing belt issues. Your mechanic seems on the level with everything he is saying with all the problems everyone else has had with this particular model. It might be risky to fix it reading what other issues people have had.

I hate everyone treating this like a vehicle issue; it's not. It's the owners fault for not taking a couple minutes to look at the manual and see what regular maintenance needs done at what odo reading. "Oh, the transmission fluid needed changed at 100,000km? How was I supposed to know!"

Now that that's out of my system! Chances are your top end of your engine is gone. You'll have to replace it!
