Transmission problem only have 1-2

Recently while driving I lost gears 3-5 and reverse. The only problem is had before that was a slight grind in 4th. 1at and 2ND are flawless and have not changed but I can't even seat the shifter in the other gears. I'm prepared to replace the trans if necessary but hoping that's not the problem.

first things first: how many miles are on the car, and what is the state of the gear oil? (if there are any metal particles in it, I.E; it has a silvery sheen to it; be prepared for either a transmission rebuild or replacement.)

It's a 2007 hatchback with just over 170,000 miles. My brother checked out the gear oil and said it looked good. He thinks a syncro blew out or I dropped/broke linkage. I've only had the car about a month and I like it enough I'm willing spend a good amount to fix it. I've already found a cheap trans that has a guarantee I'm just hoping to not have to do that much work.
