Will Solar Battery Charger work through the Cig or Acc Ports? Key off.

Niece stores her car(outdoors) while not in use.
Battery has been low several times, after sitting for weeks.

Are the Cigarette and/or Accessory Outlet active in the Aveo without the key so that a
Solar Battery Charger(sitting on dash) can be plugged into them for trickle charging the Battery?

Otherwise, a direct battery connection, with the solar panel outside the car will be necessary.

      Thanks

I want to say that most cigarette lighters are live all the time so you can use them even if the car is off. However, I have never actually used one... so I can't say for sure. A voltmeter will tell you very quickly if its live or not. If it is, you can easily hook up to it.

My 2005 is not always live. I know because it powers an XM radio and it switches off whenever I turn off the car.

      Thanks Daox, outdoorsaddix.

I'm a thousand miles away from her car, so can't test her outlet.

outdoorsaddix, do you have both the cig(dash) and acc outlets(center console) on a 2005

      Do they both function similarly?

This from the 2011 Aveo Manual: (contradictory info?)

Remove the cover to access and
replace when not in use. The
      accessory power outlet is
      operational when the ignition is
      turned to ACC/ACCESSORY or
      ON/RUN.

      WARNING
Power is always supplied to the
      outlets. Do not leave electrical
      equipment plugged in when the
vehicle is not in use because the
vehicle could catch fire and cause
      injury or death.

      Notice: Leaving electrical
      equipment plugged in for an
      extended period of time
      while the
      vehicle is off
      will drain the
      battery. Always unplug electrical
equipment when not in use and
do not plug in equipment that
      exceeds the maximum 20 ampere
      rating.

Didn't know which year you had. My 2005 has the ACC as well and it is also switched as far I remember.

The 2011 is post redesign so its possible it has different wiring. Someone who owns a 2009 up I think will have to confirm for you.

      Thanks outdoorsaddix,

      I've checked 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Aveo Manuals and none contain the Warnings and Notices;

Power is always supplied to the
      outlets

      AND

      Leaving electrical
      equipment plugged in for an
      extended period of time
      while the
      vehicle is off
      will drain the
      battery.

The warnings were added to only the 2011 Manual.

According to the 2011 manual info a Solar Battery Charger should work, the 2005-2010
manuals seems to conclude with your observations, NO KEY TURN, NO POWER.

Can anyone with a 2011 Confirm Power from the Outlets without Key?

      Thank you.
