Interesting tidbit from this review of the Sonic in South Africa:

Despite the fact that the Sonic is actually the new Aveo (it is badged Aveo in many markets abroad), on our shores it will be sold alongside the existing Aveo, which is set to soldier on for many years as a cheaper alternative.
I wonder if that means the South African market won't get the Chevy Spark, which is supposed to slot beneath the Sonic in North America as the "cheaper alternative".

And the reviewer wasn't very impressed with the Sonic.

Beefs:

  • 1.4 and 1.6 gasoline engines provide just "acceptable performance"
  • not as much fun to throw around corners as a Fiesta
  • here's a trend we're seeing in Sonic reviews: comments on the interior: "lacks the upmarket interior ambience" of competitors

On the plus side:

  • reasonably well equipped
  • comfortable ride

Conclusion:

Personally, I feel GM should have discontinued the Aveo and sold the Sonic at a lower price point. Sure, it's a very competent and likeable car in most respects, but it doesn't feel as premium as a Polo or as sporty as a Fiesta and GM should have given it a bigger price advantage over these already-overpriced rivals.
