I'm wondering who the first Sonic owner will be? Has anyone bought one yet? I almost did then bought the Cruze instead!

Good decision getting the Cruze! I went to the Chevy dealership to get my Aveo serviced last month and looked at the Cruze in the showroom. It was only released in Thailand last year so I hadn't seen one before. I was impressed by the build-quality, particularly the Volvo-grade doors - I didn't want to get back into my tin-box Aveo afterwards!
Thank you much JPD. I really do like the car quite a bit!
there is a '12 aveo member from the netherlands on here..
no one on this forum can afford a brand new sonic. sorry
and i dont see many new sonic on the street anywhere.......
( and i drive 300 km / day in the city, 16 hours a day ) ... didnt see any,,,, i only seen one or two
i think the sonic will ended up like aveo,,, when it comes to 2013,,, all gm dealer try to sell their 2012 for dirt cheap, like $9000
like aveo...
no one is gonna buy them
They want to market the Sonic as an enthusiast/tuner car then the bastids go and integrate the POS factory radio with the body control module. That is just the kind of BS that will turn off the demographic they claim to be targeting.
The Fiesta ST had me thinking...until I sat in a Fiesta in the showroom. I managed to get out of it without calling the fire department, but damn that's a cramped car. The Focus ST should arrive stateside about the time my Aveo is paid off...
i think im it ??
i have waited around 7 months for the car here in the Netherlands.
We have bought a 2012 Chevrolet aveo(sonic) LT. black edition..
Black 18 inch rims full option. (leather, etc)
I think the Sonic has come too little too late for whom it is marketed to. It's too expensive for what it is.
I was talkling about Sonics not Aveos. Sonics in my area start at 15.5K. Thats a lot for a car that replaces the Aveo.
12K used? Well there is a fool born every minute.
The only way the Aveo could be sold (not compete) was with rebates. After rebates the Aveo was a sub 10K car. 12K fully loaded at best! So you could buy a new car with warranty fo 10K or less.
At 15.5-18K the sonic (renamed Aveo) will never compete in that segment, there are far too many other cars in that range with better mileage and better resale value and better features.
NYChevoo is probably the most dedicated Aveo owner ever, and he bought a cruze after a test drive.
So I doubt many on here will "upgrade" to a sonic because it is not an upgrade, it isn't even a lateral move.
There is a growing market for "nice" small cars. Historically (in the US at least) small has meant cheap. Now, people are coming around to the idea that small doesn't have to mean cheap. People want a nice car, but also want good mileage. That is where the Sonic comes into play.
If I were ever to buy another car in the segment, which I would never do, I would get the Sonic in a heart beat.
I know you were talking about the new Aveo, excuse me, Sonic. My point was, if the 2nd generation Aveo can sell for 12k used, the 3rd generation Aveo, err...Sonic is enough of an improvement to sell for 16k new.
FWIW - I paid 8996 + 172 dealer fees + state fees when I bought my 2010 Aveo new...I won't be spending 16k on a Sonic anytime soon.
At that price for a few thousand more I went with the 2012 Cruze
i paid $4000 for my 2009 with 38000km on it,,,, like last august
Just to update you all eventhough as I quote member "Aveojunk" and as he say I maybe the most dedicated Aveo owner but I bought a 2012 Cruze after the testdrive I still miss my Aveo everyday and second guess the purchase of the new car. Now my wife knowing how I felt about my 04 Aveo and even bearing in mind how much she likes my new Cruze still purchased the 2012 Sonic. She has all the gizmos and gadgets that the Sonic has even the bluetooth connectivity features. Her cas has however has the 1.8L motor in it. I'm curious to see if it will hold up like my old first generation 1.6L. The cost of her Sonic 1LT with Connectivity and the 1.8L was $18500.00 as opposed to the $19800.00 of my Cruze Eco package with Connectivity. The dealership feels that the Cruzes are priced way to close to the Sonics. They sell 3 to 4 Cruzes a day versus the 1 or 2 Sonics that roll out the door. I asked my wife why she went for the Sonic versus the Cruze and she said that she loves her little hatchback. The way it drives and handles and how easy it is to park as well. She jsut wanted all that in an updated package and the Victory Red is what got her.
Having owned a 04 and 06 Aveo sedan back in Canada, the 04 being wrote off in what should have been an easy fix, but the offset front collision totally destoyed it, and a 2010 Aveo here in Turkey, I can tell you there is no comparison to the "new" Aveo. I have had my 2012 Aveo now for nearly 3 weeks, and all the features, the way it drives and the saftey make me feel it was the right decision for me. All my old Aveo's had 2 airbags, this one has 8, (I believe it's 10 in North America), the traction control, stablility control, bluetooth, etc, make it a great choice for me. Also, and I know you don't get it in the US and Canada, the diesel engine. The old Aveo never had that option over here, and the mileage is truly amazing, the torque at the low end so much better. Maybe the price difference is big, but you are getting a lot more car for your buck. Just the tires they are putting on them here, Continetal Premium Contact 2 are so much more a tire then the old Hankooks. Just my opinion, but it is everything the old Aveo wasn't, and more.
As for what Steve B wrote previously I am in complete agreement, and so is my wife. As dependable and easy to drive as our 04 Sedan, and her 07 Hatchback were, you cant hold a candle to the new (Aveo for Steve B) Sonic that my wife purchased last week. The very first thing about the car that amazed me was how much more "solid" it seemed over its older counterparts. next was the drivability of the Sonic. Total world of difference. Drives like a much bigger car. Third was how much more room inside there is, and last was all the available options the car has. I still am very fond of my first generation Aveo and all the miles we did together that were trouble free but this new Sonic my wife has is pretty damn cool!
I like the aveo because its like driving a "tin can" from the 70s-early 90s. there are a few reasons why some of those cars still get the "best" mpg to this day... weight, hp, correct emissions (not too much), low displacements, more aerodynamic (not raised front pedestrian crash standards). I understand the want for safety equipment being the only non SUV on the road at times, and how those SUV drivers can drive while texting, talking, checking email, yelling at there kids sitting 20 ft away from them in the back seat, etc.. but that does cause blind spots with thicker window pillars, we've all discussed.
I drove the sonic and cruze, it is definitely a different class of car. And not a bad car. I still think most cars are overpriced, because of what you can get for the price range they are in.. But the weight and feel of the drive to me were "heavy suv" like, I guess on the highway most people would find security in that. But even an A8L feels "nimble" on the highway.
(EDIT, i should say that is initial reaction due to the fact I went from my go cart of an aveo into a stock cruze and sonic for test drives.. I do not own either, so the long term ownership point of view I do not have)
I would LOVE to slam the Sonic onto the ground though...
Hellaflush bro
Stick a rusted hood on the sonic as well and you will be styling on everyone.
I can attest, the 1.3 litre 75 hp diesel engine is more then capable of getting you around. There are many big hills and also mountians around where I live, some on the 6 lane highway with curves coming down and up, and a speed limit of 120 km, (a mere suggestion here, lol). The torque on the low end is incredible, I am able to breeze by gasoline powered cars going up, and the stability control, electric steering and brake assist are wonderful coming down, especially with curves. The improvements in the new Aveo (Sonic) make the diesel a extremely comfortable and fun car with a extra sense of security to drive over here, and again, the milage, couldn't be happier.
Keep in mind the prices of cars in other countries are not directly related to prices in the US..
like a golf GTI in england starts at 25,650 pounds, which is more than $40000 us. While i the US it starts around $24000.
I was making a generalized comment as people including you started talking about pricing.
And since Steve B is from Turkey i thought it would be a helpful comment.
Moral of the story is to only buy Honda and that NYChevoo is a blind fool who should have bought a fit because it is better than the sonic. :D
Both the VW Golf and Honda Fit are out of the question over here in Turkey. The Honda Fit 1.4 litre, a smaller car, doesn't come in diesel, and the base model, very plain, is in USD here, 21,453. The Volkswagen Golf 1.6 litre TDI 90 hp base model is 26,364 USD. The Chevrolet "new" Aveo, 1.3 litre 75 hp with start/stop system and nicely equipped LT version, mine, is 21,359 USD. All prices are including tax. Of course I paid less then that, but it shows you the value of this new diesel car. Remeber, the goverment here is very hard up/greedy for tax money. So anything 1.6 litre and below is taxed at 37%, above 1.6 to 2.0 litre, tax is 80%, and above 2 litre, 108%! Cars are not allowed to be imported into Turkey for longer then 6 months, unless you are willing to put a bond with the goverment equal to the value of the car, which will be returned when either you take the car out of the country or scrap it. You cannot sell it to a Turk, but can to another legal foreign resident here, if they are willing to put up the bond on it. So IMHO, the diesel Aveo is a great value.
the Dealer that sold me Scootaloo has another 2010 Aveo, but its Highway Yellow, has Power Everything, has 3,484 more miles on it than mine, and they want $12,728. and to think, not 3 months ago, I was at that EXACT Dealer, where I got my Scoots for $10,382.93 and she had 38K on the clock! (my opinion on why they want $12K for it is because of the power options.) and at Alexander Chevrolet-Buick-GMC (my Local GM Dealer, and ironically, is right next door to the Dealer where I got Scoots), they have a pair of Aveo5s (a 2007 and a 2009) they want nearly $13K for the '09, and only $9K for the '07!
.............
Tried a Fit over here, for the price, and drive quality, and fit and finish, it is way, way overpriced here in Turkey, the "new" Aveo is heads and shoulders above it in all aspects, especially price and mileage with the diesel.
Hey all just so everyone knows with "my being a blind fool" or "I couldve bought a vw, mazda, or honda" and whether or not "my choices were limited to GM Products" let me quickly fill you all in and by the way do not think I am offended by anyones comments here. Thats why we have the forums. Its to voice our own opinions. Its called freedom of speech. Anyway if you all remember last year I was all gung-ho on buying the new Jetta. Remember how I constanly posted about that but when the time finally came I bought the new Cruze? As far as thats concerned I am very pro-Chevy. Always have been, always will be. I know that there are many finer and better engineered products out there like BMW, Mercedes, Toyotas, Mazdas, and Hondas, and so on. I do not feel in any way that my GM lacks in accomplishing what I need done which is to commute 140 miles a day round trip. I also believe that a car is only as good as the person who takes the time to maintain that car properly. I'm real big on that. Now why would I want to get stranded on the side of the road for something that was avoidable because I was too cheap or lazy to be preventative. They are only junk if you treat them like junk. People need to realize that they work hard for their money and what they own. Why not take care of what you own because you worked hard for the money to buy it? As far as my wifes new Sonic is concerned, she was very fond of her 2007 Aveo5 Hatchback but really like all the options my new Cruze has, and also still wanted to retain the easiness of driving her hatchback so the Sonic was a natural choice.
Another point I would like to make is that I am glad both the Sonic made at Orion, and the Cruze made at Lordstown are both manufactured here by American workers. Now I know that not all the parts in both cars are completely made here but at least some Americans have jobs because GM decided to do final assembly in the USA. Now here is a quote for you all to think about! Preston Tucker (Tucker Automobile Company) once said back in 1948 "If we're not careful then someday we're going to be buying our cars and radios from our former enemies" Sound like the truth to anyone? Do you want to send your money overseas so that some other nations can benefit? Would you rather tell some child here "I'm sorry I have no money to give you because I had to send my money overseas to feed some family overthere" We have people out of work, who want to work but we are outsourcing our jobs overseas where labor is cheaper than keeping our jobs here at home. I know this is going to ignite a frenzy of opposition and hopefully discussion. It needs to be discussed. For those of us who live here in America this is very important. You have no idea how much I hate the fact that we spend billions over seas but we have children here who are hungry, elderly who are not cared for and I could go on but this is how I feel. Just remember, and product that you can buy here whether its cars, soap, shampoo, a frigging broom helps keep our money here. Anything thats made here others will benefit here at home.
I was being sarcastic as usual NY ;), but +1. Jobs need to stay here though, everyone can agree on that.
