Diagnostic Check for Vehicle Speed Sensor?

I have the code telling me there is no signal from the speed sensor. I'd like to check it before I buy I new one in case it is something else causing the fault. I read on this forum that it is possible to have a stripped gear in the transmission that can cause this fault to occur.

Is there a way to check the sensor if I take it out of the transmission?

Pull the sensor out and see if it has a gear or something that you can spin.
