      manual transmission problem

I have a 2005 Aveo sedan with way too many miles to put much money into it but was wondering if anyone out there might be able to diagnose a transmission problem. When the left front tire spins, I get a very slight grinding sound. This happens whether it is under under power or coasting in neutral, and it is only the left front. The right side is normal ops. I don't believe the sound is coming from the wheel bearings (replaced a year ago and cannot be heard at the tire when it is jacked up and spinning) but in or very near the transmission. I'm not a mechanic but am smart enough to not want to start throwing parts at it to see if I can make the sound go away.

      Well,
if you hear a grinding in the tranny…..labor will be expensive and getting to the offending part will require extensive disassembly.

Hey thanks for the info. I was kind of guessing that was going to be the situation. I was just a bit confused that the grinding was still taking place when the car was coasting in neutral.

If the wheel is turning, so is the output of the trans……
most likely a bad output bearing.
Used trannys are cheap and easy to put in, but only if you think the car is worth it.

Thanks for putting the pieces together for me. Now is makes sense. As far as what the car is worth, what does a short ton of scrap metal get these days? Sad to think this chapter of my automotive life on the Aveo Forum is coming to a close. I will say I truly appreciate all the help people like you are willing to give. Keep up the great work.
