AveoClub/AveoForum: cleaned up and under new management
Hey everyone ...
AveoClub/AveoForum has a new lease on life, under new management.
Former admin Matt (exodus) has moved on to other things, and we'd like to introduce ourselves: AveoClub/AveoForum's new owners/admins are Tim (Daox) and Darin (MetroMPG).
You probably noticed by now that the board has been thoroughly cleaned up. We spent many, many hours de-spamming the forums, tidying up your existing threads, deleting the threads started by spammers, and killing their accounts. (Removed over 10,000 posts and nearly 6,000 user accounts.)
We upgraded the forum software and have put other security measures in place to prevent that from happening again.
And who exactly are "we"?
We're a couple of gearheads with different automotive backgrounds:
Tim (Daox) has lots of performance mods under his belt on his various cars (Toyota Paseo / Tercel), like:
- a custom, one-of-a-kind supercharger setup
- full custom exhaust
- built a custom turbo manifold
- fabricated/sold various bits like a master cylinder brace and intake manifold insulating gasket
- shaved and DIY ported head
- other typical stuff like springs, strut bars, underdrive pulleys, headers, cold air intakes, adjustable cam pulley
Darin (MetroMPG) has a "pre-Aveo" - a Pontiac Firefly (Canadian market Geo Metro), which used to be GM's entry level car before the Aveo came along (not counting the few years in between where the Cavalier was the bottom of the company's food chain). He was once a driving instructor and recovering track day / racing school junkie. These days the mods he's into are mostly about increasing fuel efficiency:
- gear swaps
- cam swap
- electrical system mods
- a pile of practical and experimental aerodynamic mods
- complete electric conversion (he and a buddy converted a Geo Metro to 100% electric / battery power)
We're here to stay
We realize a lot of members gave up on this site due to the flood of spam and the admin being unavailable to help sort it out (we don't blame you -- probably would have done the same thing ourselves).
For those of you who will be sticking around, we want you to know we're on top of things and committed to the long-term future of the forum. For fun, and to reward your patience, we're holding a contest to give away some automotive swag.
See: >> Contest: win $150 in Aveo aftermarket parts or a ScanGauge <<
We're looking forward to improving the site and getting to know you.
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
thanks fellas,it was a mess.djleebold
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
No problem.
We think we got it all, but if you see anything we missed, let us know and we'll zap it!
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
I'm glad to see this old board up and running properly again. I used to frequent this forum with Keith aka Petrified.Rabbit. We did leave, and ended up starting AveoNetwork. I'm glad to see some new interest in this board and hope we can all contribute info, mods and stories about our Aveos.
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
Good job on all the work cleaning this place up! spam sucks so much
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
Thanks guys.
And the good news is we haven't seen a spammer sign up since upgrading the forum software and implementing a few other precautions. In the "intermission" between the time much of the membership threw up their hands in frustration and gave up on AveoClub and us taking over, spammers (mostly bots) had been signing up at the rate of about 5-10 per day and polluting the site with crap. Since then... zero. (Touch wood.)
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
if you upgraded the phpbb, or even the sign up process, it will keep them out.
i believe i had ip banned 10000 or so spambots..

I remember that, I spent 6 hours getting you that list.
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
Thank you all.
None of my business, but...
Why is the new management interested in this forum?
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
Oh, yeah...
Neat job with the Logo.

I had actually been thinking about starting an Aveo forum for 2 years (registered another Aveo domain in 2008 . I've been interested in Aveos since they first came out, mainly because I own a couple of GM's previous entry level car (Pontiac Firefly/Geo Metro). I've got a soft spot for the runt of the litter, I guess.
Tim and I are gearheads, plus we have experience building / running / moderating other forums. So when the opportunity to revive AveoClub came up, we decided to go for it. Seemed like a waste to let it die completely because there's a lot of good info posted here.

Thanks. That's a small taste of a complete site redesign that's in the works.
A designer friend of mine is working on something for us.

Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
good to see the forum up n runnin!!
cheers and drive safe!
Re: AveoClub: cleaned up and under new management
Well, the site sure does look nice. The only other one I found before this site was aveoclub.proboards.com, but it seems like everyone gave up on that site. Even though it does have some good info and write-ups. :) I don't know what this site used to be like, but it sure looks nice now. +1 on the props for the forum logo. =D>
