Thanks for all the replies, looks like this car just wasn't made to handle Alberta winters, however, I'll keep looking for a 205F thermostat as well. Thanks for the link josefb134, unfortunately, that is a USA site and doesn't deliver to Canada (for cheap anyway), I'll take a look around the city and see what I can find.

I'm more relieved than anything that the car is not in need of major work to fix the problem.

I'll bet I'm one of the few with a radio that is unable to turn up the volume when its really cold as well, as soon as you touch the volume, it goes right to zero and is very difficult to turn up. LOL

hmmm... maybe see about geting a different radio put in haha and yepp no problem, you might be able to get on amazon.com and look for a 205 thermostat, their shipping rates for canada are fond here

      Amazon.com Help: Canada

and dont look too bad. if you have the metal housing already then you might be able to just buy a 205 thermostat without the housing and you should be good to go, but dont take my word for it lol

I was doin some serious Googlin and found this bit of info. We use a standard type 48mm Thermostat. I typed 48mm Thermostat in NAPA online and found part number THM 383 as a standard type 48mm 205* Thermostat.... I'm gonna order that and a new Aveo O-ring tomorrow...... I'll post with pics when it arrives...

This isn't the first time I've done this either... When I built my highly modified Off Road Subaru it was common in the Subaru forums to run a 160* Thermostat from a Ford 460 to help from over heating.

This is a list of vehicles that come from the same part number Thermostat..... Same part number... same part....

Nope..... not gonna happen. My buddy at NAPA had the THM 383 in stock and it's actually a 54mm. But it pulls up under search for 48mm. He said that's stupid, good thing I have'm in stock. The Aveo 195* Thermostat had 48mm stamped on the flange so that's right. Comes out to about 1.89 inches. I just spent over an hour on the NAPA website and looked at the 1,500 (!) items that pulled up under thermostat and every cross reference and all brands.... Only about 5 were above 195* and the sizes were way too far off to fit. It can easily be done if you feel like sittin' down with sheet metal sheers and the housing and cut a bigger one down to fit it, which is actually a pretty good idea..........

I'm going to try and insulate the rad as much as possible with either foil bubble insulation or my co-worker told me to find a plastic sign. The cardboard I have in right now is good but does let some cold air through.

it would make more sense to use your old thermostat, and change the spring out to the other temperature..

Well, here's my update. After finding the forum and clicking around, I found out thanks to you folks, that I should change my timing belt (I don't read owners manuals, but should start). My aveo is at 131,000 km, well overdue. I was going to try it myself thanks to the excellent posts but I called my local auto shop and they said it would be ~$280 for the belt only and would only do the water pump if it was leaking, very inexpensive in my mind, so I booked it in yesterday. They called at noon and of course the water pump was leaking, cost was now $680. When I picked it up, they realized they overcharged hours and the total price, all in was $611.

So, this morning, with the temps at -17C I drove to work and the car warmed up much faster than usual, I actually got warm in the car on my 20 minute commute. So, question is, is it the timing belt, water pump, new antifreeze that I have to thank for this? I also noticed last night when picking it up that the car didn't squeal when starting it up cold, it usually squeals for 30 seconds on a cold startup.

Couple of other notes with this job, the new belt is good for 160,000km and they told me that the water pump has lifetime warranty from AC Delco. A couple of bonuses that means this car should last me and my teenage boys the life of this car.

Once again, thanks for the help, hope I can pay some of this forward.

A bad water pump can cause cooling system problems. I found out the hard way to always have the water pump changed when the timing belt is being replaced. I know it costs more but it's better than having to take that whole area apart again when it goes bad.

Help a faster warm up by not turning on the heat or the heater fan until the needle is to range.
That is exactly what I always do.

Well i was going to post the same problem but seams we have the same one. This is my first post here so i have 2 09 aveos now and have had a 04 aveo too. i live just outside of Calgary so it gets real cold here. My aveo has always taken a while to heat up but when it does it blows hot same with my old 04.It gets warm and stays just under the 3rd line on the guage. For the first time last week it went down the second line after i got into the city and drove around a bit. and now this is the norm.It is great on the highway temp wise but in the city with stop and go the temp goes down and so does the heat. I thought it might be a relay so switched them but no help. so now am thinking thermostat not working proper. Is this covered by warranty. The car has 68k and is a 09. Thankx Richard
