I've had this since around 100,000 miles on my 2006. I think it throws two codes: B1378 and B1448. It's the airbag connectors, the other is the passenger airbag sensor, which tells the system someone is sitting in your passenger seat. Those are the common fail points for the Aveo airbag system and tend to short out. It's pretty cheap to replace, and you can probably do it yourself as everything is under the seats. I think you can only get the new parts at the dealership. That I'm not 100% on. I had a shop do mine because I'm lazy.
So it's probably a dealer only kind of fix then if they have the part.
Step one would be getting your car scanned to find out why the warning light is being thrown and what code gets pulled. This will help find the exact fix of the original problem.
In the US I know autozone (a common parts store) will pull codes for free, some general repair shops as well. Some dealership will scan a car for free if you have a warning light on during an oil change. Other dealerships charge just to do this. But without that, you'll be replacing things blind hoping it goes off.
generally speaking, my repair cost me around 150 dollars. One hour of labor, taxes, shop fee and parts.
No codes are being thrown.
are you sure about that? The Airbag warning light wouldn't be on without a code hitting the ECU, thus tripping the airbag light. Sometimes the general scan modules that regular shops/parts stores use cannot communicate with the aveo airbag system. The chevy dealership will have the correct scanner to communicate with the system. I'd suggest that.
Generally speaking tho, the airbag light being on isn't going to effect the performance of your car. But it also means that your airbags might not work in the event of a crash. That's a chance I wouldn't take in an Aveo IMO. Hope this helps
Well I didn't take it to a dealership to have it scanned cause they would charge me. I wasn't worried about the performance of it, I'm not sure why you thought I was. I want it to make sure the airbag would deploy.
It's like this. Go to the dealer and get robbed or go to the dealer with an end in mind and manager their time to save you cash. If you have a smart phone buy this!
Amazon.com: New Version V1.5 ELM327 OBDII OBD2 Bluetooth Car Diagnostic Interface Scanner: Automotive
It's a bluetooth to ODBII computer connector. It's dirt cheap!
I have a scan gauge. It did not pull a code.
shouldn't be much more than 75 dollars to have a dealership plug it in. I'd go that route. Like you said, you want that airbag to work in a crash.
For $75 I might as well tell them to just fix it and not bother scanning it.
never good to go in blindly and try to fix a problem. To fix the problem they first have to find out what's causing the problem. No ethical mechanic is going to start throwing parts on a car when it's throwing a warning light. That's wasting your money, and wasting their time
Excellent! Sorry about my snippy post. I misread your post about going to the dealer. Here is a suggestion at the front of the car are the two bumper sensors. I would remove the battery, then disconnect one of the sensors, and then reconnect the battery to see if the system throws a scan code.
It should throw a scan code that way you can tell what's broken. Otherwise it's going through the schematic to see if it's a hard wired circuit OR straight to the computer. If all the related sensors are going to the computer and you don't have a scan code, then it might be forced to go the dealer.
get it scanned by a certified gm dealership is the fastest way to get the problem solved.

I under no circumstances, will ever provide you guys with my vin number.
The independent Napa Autopro shop I work at has two different brands of scanner that can read the airbag codes. Any professional shop would be the same. You have options other than he dealer toget it read and/or fixed.Quote:

Some do, some don't. Down here in 'Merica a lot of independent shops do not keep up on the current scanners. I know when my airbag light went out, I went to two different shops, wasted about three hours of my life and they couldn't get the scanners to pull the code. I went to the dealership, they found the code and fixed the problem within 30 minutes.
What was code and problem Ronnie Mund?
B1448 I believe. Which was the passenger airbag sensor that tells the airbag system if someone is or is not sitting in the passenger seat. I also had faulty connectors causing it to spike then short out. It happened around the 5 year mark/100,000 mile mark.
a good way to tell if that's your problem is turn the car on, and have someone sit in the passenger seat. If the passenger airbag light doesn't go off (the annoying yellow one), that's the problem.
If someone sits in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag off light turns off which I assume means there airbag works. It's the srs light in red that stays on.
Oh, gotcha.
yours should be an easy fix. You can get all the connectors (the ones you find under the front seats) for under 40 bucks at a parts store. I'd start there. If that doesn't fix it, I say it's the module. Still not a super expensive part.
It has to read from a different module as far as I understand, not the ECU. The airbag control module sends the code. Thus is why some, not all, but some scanners won't pick the code up if it's from the airbag system. Don't take my word for it, I'm recalling this from about 4 years ago second hand from the mechanic who fixed my Aveo
sounds like a way for the dealership to guarantee them some money
imagine that... A business that is trying to make money.
I'm not sure what your beef is with corporations or dealerships. As an Aveo owner I have no problems going to the dealership when my local affordable shop can't fix a problem. Yes it's more expensive, but I think it's a small price to pay to have a certified mechanic who was trained to fix my car. Also they have access to all Technician bulletins on your make/model car that can save you money, as it's easier for them to find out the problem.
From my personal experience the "horrible money grubbing" dealership that solved my airbag light problem gave me the option to buy the parts from the parts department and do the repair myself as it was very minor. I opted to have them repair the car. My own personal choice. So if they were after money, they wouldn't even have gave me the option to fix it myself after their diagnosis of the problem. Maybe if you put some more gauges, DVD players and G8 mufflers on your car it will magically fix your airbag problem. Just an idea
Well that was mean. My feelings are slightly hurt. And taking my g8 to the dealership has resulted in a lot of problems. Considering not a single one ever worked on one and few didn't even know what it was. A dealership to me is always a last resort. In this case, I was trying to exhaust my options before I was forced to go there. And the airbag thing just started, at first I thought it was just a blown fuse.
you come off rather tin foil hat like with your dealership hate. Try a less passive aggressive posting method maybe. We're all here to help. I've exhausted all that I know about this issue and how it effected my Aveo. The only advice I can give you is go to the dealer or buy every single Airbag part and replace it. Because without pulling the code from a proper scanner, you're clueless as far as what's causing the airbag light to trip.

sorry i got a little smiley happy
FYI, if you take you car in to a dealer for the SRS light, they are required to repair it before releasing it I had 3 local dealers tell me that today.
I am looking for a local wrench with a reader that can read the soft codes. There is a You Tube video that mentions one by brand / model, and I did find it on Amazon for $200.00....
Same thing happened to me. Airbag light on. Took it to the dealer. They said my airbag module was bad lol. They wanted $600 for the new module. They can't pull the code from the OBD II scanner. You have to physically take the module out. We took it out and went to a local mechanic that had the right scanner to plug my airbag module in to. He reflashed it and we put it back in. It's been a year and haven't had a problem since.
