So I think I read somewhere that if i switch to a shift knob without a button the key wont come out of the ignition. Is this true, or can I take the 2 allen screws out of the front and put any knob (auto, or standard) to replace it?

Well im pretty sure this is for fail safe reasons, ive worked on cars for ovet 10 years and i can firmly say that you will need the shift button or you will not be able to depress the button action to get the vehicle into gear. No standard shift knob will work unless you can push that button some how. This is with my experience with things. But my aveo is stick shift. So i may be wrong. But i doubt it bro..
So with that being said. ..if its not in park or in neutral, the key will not come out, this is correct. If you could take the key out while in gear it would be a none issue. Not the case here. Good luck
I found some on ebay like this
Polished 175g Metal Shift Knob Adapter for Auto Automatic Gear Lever Selector | eBay
Think that would work? you have to press down to shift
That will work. But for 30 plus dollars? Idk...
The price is steep, but I think its because its for the adapter and the knob. I am holding off on it for now, but if the adapter is compatible with all knobs I'd have no problem picking it up
