And ditching yet another name brings to mind GM's bad habit of chucking the baby out with the bathwater.

The company suffers in comparison to other automakers that improve successive generations of their cars to build loyalty. It's stereotypical short-term thinking, vs. the longer term outlook of some other marques.

I will agree that GM has a habit of discontinuing cars that earned them record sales instead of continuing the car's name. Like the Chevrolet Cavalier, Cobalt, Monte Carlo, Lumina, and original Nova. But compared to GM's previous history, the Aveo isn't that big a hit in the US market.

      Here's a couple more tidbits:

This article suggests the change, if it happens, would be for North America only:

      http://www.autonews.com/article/2010...6/101009875/-1

And a major reason they are apparently still debating whether or not to change it is:

A name change specifically for the North American market would fly in the face of Chevrolet's global strategy. I'll call it, “One Chevy.” As part of an effort to build up the Chevrolet brand globally, Chevrolet's cars carry the same name across the world.

At least that was the plan, One Chevy, until now.

But what about Chevrolet's global strategy? What about building sales with vehicles and nameplates recognizable across the world?

I just thought of something. If GM is going to change the name as they say they are, they're going to try to find a clever name for it. Just watch. The new name is going to be 5 times harder to pronounce than "Avayo"

The US gets the short end of the stick by every manufacturer (period).

Them completely changing the name of the car to make it more desirable to SUV driving, Starbucks drinking, fad seeking, house poor yuppies is what is expected for the general american market. Also engine / transmission combinations that are fuel efficient and fun, are tossed aside because you can't have sport without luxury. ETC ETC ETC.

      DETROIT- 2010-October 7, 2010
-- General Motors Co. will spend $145 million to build a new Buick compact car -- the Verano -- at its Orion Township assembly plant north of Detroit.

The new Buick sedan will join the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact to be assembled at the factory. Under a new labor agreement, GM says the Aveo will be the first profitable subcompact car to be built in the United States.

Profitable because they jack the price up past the competition.

If the comments here are representative of the customer base at large, can't blame GM for its short-sightedness. If the burning issue of a name change is that serious that you become morose, cynical, and can't go to sleep without a hot Irish toddy then send your concerns to GM's boss with some of the more well reasoned thoughts here to support why keeping the name benefits the company and the customer. Jeez on the basis of some scattered media baiting you are doing a great reenactment of a losing political volunteer team's woes upon the news of their candidate conceding the race. Don't let media weenies stir you up.
