Bubba Coupe
Is there a general off-topic forum? Like a place I can post a build thread for a non-Aveo. I'd really like to share with you guys the build of my 88 Jetta Coupe. I'm going a bit different route than most people with small cars and raising it with bigger tires and fully intend on getting it DIRTY! And probably adding "character" while out on trails and class B min maintenance roads.

Here is fine, or the photos forum.

Can someone change the thread title to something like "Bubba Coupe" or something fitting? I'll just keep the thread here then if this is fine.
So what we have here is an 88 Jetta coupe with rally stripes and period correct foam spoiler (can't remember the brand off hand) and Kamei side skirts, looks like at one time it had the whole Kamei kit. The car had been sitting in this guys back yard for about 2 yrs and before that who knows. The guy I bought it hauled it to Iowa from MO. The newest reciept that was in the glovebox was dated 2006 and from MO.
Plans:
~2-3" lift all around (via later model Passat suspension, possibly more lift later on)
5-bolt swap (same as the lift)
Quad round headlight swap - done!
custom rally-styled front bumper with light bar
215/60/15 rubber (bigger in future)
Possibly some interior updates from a later model Golf that I parted
Who knows what else.
The day it was dragged from the back yard.

More later when I'm not being summoned to be social. LOL

Looks like a good project.

Looks like a lot of work. :)

It'll be a fair amount of work, but will be a lot of fun in the process. I need to find the pictures of it with the quad round headlights installed. Unfortunately, something in the ignition system died so I need to hunt that down to get it running again. Then I can dig into the suspension and 5 bolt swap. Oh, and the major rust repair on the drivers front inner fender. I'll post more pics of it when I rememeber where I saved them.

Here are a few updates.

I had a bad hall sensor in the dizzy so I tracked down one of my spares and got the dizzy swapped out with a good one and it runs! Adjusted the throttle close switch and it idles like it should besides at cold start.
This morning I drove it up to the gas station and gave it a full tank of gas and then brought it home and tore out the dash to clean things up and see if there was anymore mouse damaged wires. Also covered the HVAC doors with some duct tape after peeling as much of the foam off as I could, this should keep the heat working well and prevent faces full of rotten foam.
Tomorrow is a bunch of cleaning and hopefully some extra sound deadening. Then, we'll see how soon I can get things back together. I may tear out some of the jute insulation in favor of some aftermarket sound deadening also.

i built a vr coupe years ago..
did you say why your lifting it? i might have missed it?
-
Yup, a LIFT. Wanted to build something I didn't care what season it is. And to do something different. I'll try to get some pictures of it stripped down and as I reassemble. Found some rust that I'm probably just going to grind down and coat until spring when I can really dig in and cut, chop, rebuild.

Pictures of the dash process.
I found a mouse nest behind the glovebox and a wire that was chewed on. SO to be sure I wouldn't have further problems I chose to pull the dash and be sure. In the process I decided to get rid of the old crappy jute insulation and install some Elemental Designs deadener, it worked GREAT and was SO easy to install! I also found some unfortunate rust on the seam between the wheel well inside and the floorpan/ firewall. And while I was there these cars have a tendency to blow foam particals at you out of the HVAC box because the flapper doors are covered in open cell foam that deteriorates throughout the years of heat and cold.
