Is it normal for the A/C compressor to sound really loud and clunky like an electric air compressor? Everything works the way it should and I know the engine drag is normal for a small car. it's the loud noise I am worry about.

how warm is it? why do you need ac anyhow? if probably compressing ice.. :P
its still probably just too cold for it, or its full of moisture? (ice)..
is it the clutch cycling making noise or the compressor itself?
The sound is coming from the compressor and I have not heard the clutch even turn off on it when it is running. The temps have been above freezing here an even in the summer it sounded the same. I think that I am over due for a trip to the dealer.

it seems like it, the compressor shouldn't be any louder than any other car.
i would be willing to think (still) that the ac is designed to remove @ 20*. its boiling point is -15* so instead of pumping gas134a through the system i was thinking it was liquid.. and since you can NOT compress liquid.. it possibly harmed your a/c compressor..
You should probably check the ball bearings on the a/c compressor
