      Careful Driving

There was a massive accident on the 401 heading out of Toronto today. I was reading the news report and noticed something rather crazy in the pictures.

That's a Pontiac Wave Sedan underneath that truck. I drove home through the snow today and this was a sobering reminder of how careful I should be. Drive safe this winter guys.

I heard it was something like a 60 car pile up.

True that. I'm usually good with snow, but I spun off the road earlier this winter and needed towed out. Luckily nothing was hurt except my pride. Now I drive like an old man when it's snowing. Remember getting there a few minutes sooner isn't worth your or anyone's life.

Thankfully no one was killed in that pile up, at least since I last heard a report about it. Makes me not want to follow a transport truck ever.

Wow, same color as mine. We've had similar snow here..(just south of the same lake) and I actually ended up going into a spin, but luckily was able to drive away. Traffic missed me, and I stayed on the roadway. Lucky me. How did I manage to get into the mess? I knew better. But I got impatient behind a car in clear lane that seemed to keep going slower. Desided to try to sneak into a greasy lane and almost learned an expensive lesson about trying that with crappy rear tire tread. I felt the rear begin to break loose, and immediately tried to back off and ease back into my lane but I set the car off balance and went into what I call "the death pendulum" where the car begins to fishtail at speed.

I rode it as long as I could, breaking the speed down so that when it finally snapped around I was under 40mph, which is somewhat stoppable with the brakes. Stopped just short of going off the shoulder and being stuck in the snow. Lucky lucky lucky.

We had another big snowstorm on Friday - someone died in a crash on the 401 near here. They closed the highway both directions for most of the day.

Not a bad idea to remind ourselves to take it easy.
