"Chevy Sonic" to replace Aveo name? "Chevrolet Sonic" trademark applied for by GM

I hate to admit, I'd be wary of build quality with the US made car, particularly since the workers who assemble it are going to be making about HALF the wage ($14) of other GM assembly workers. This 2-tier pay cut was a specific deal the company & union made to get the Aveo ... I mean Sonic built in the U.S. The company insisted it couldn't build a profitable subcompact in the U.S. because of wages.

i've been saying that since the get go..

i thought they were just talking about early production not enough out of orion.. they keep talking about building other cars on the platform out of the same plant, so i guess i had assumed eventually they would make more / all..

but i think the price in the rest of the world with the korean built car = better car for less money. even at $14 an hour i think the currency conversion to work load is in favor of korea.. because you know the union is going to "say" half the money, half the effort.

I thought GM was aiming for this Aveo to be a "one name/one world" type car. It would keep the Aveo name no matter where it was sold? I must say I'm a little dissappointed? So I'd have to buy a "Sonic Sedan"? I guess thats a non-purchase for me since I'm getting a new Jetta anyway.

It was supposed to be a global nameplate. Apparently North Americans don't know how to pronounce Aveo.

God I hope not.... Although I think they should steal an idea from the Dodge Caliber and intriduce a heated and cooled beverage cooler inside the glovebox. Test drove a Caliber with that and thought that was cool and something I'd make use of.

That would be freaking sweet! I would love that for a pop on long road trip during the summer, or for a cup of coffee during the winter, although the coffee would be for when my dad borrows my car when he's working on his.

Chevrolet announced today that its all-new, U.S. built small car will be called the Chevrolet Sonic in North America. The vehicle for markets outside the U.S., Canada and Mexico was seen at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and will retain the Aveo name. (12/09/2010) (United States)
