It LIVES again... 132000+ now.
I ordered a rebuilt head from odessa cylinder heads on ebay with a complete gasket set and new head bolts for $600... Ordered a new timing belt w/pulleys kit from Amazon for $112... Ordered a new water pump from Amazon for $37... Ordered a new serpentine belt on Amazon for about $16... And ended up needing a new Alternator as well (from Amazon for $116). I put it all together, torqued the bolts appropriately and I'm on the road again! The engine is running smooth but I need to get an oil change.
I ended up bending all 16 valves once I looked at the original head so don't let anyone fool you... if anything in that timing belt line goes it is going to cook your valves. And for those debating whether or not to replace the pulleys and the belt at the same time... don't think twice... get the pulleys. They're cheap with the kit.
So... $8500 when the car was new in 2005, about $600 in wheel bearings and another $1k for this recent parts extravaganza and, all-in-all... still less than every other new car out there and 6 years of pretty dependable service.
