intake problems

broken another damn mount for my CAI....nothing like trying to drive home staying under 2500rpms because anything above that the car sounded like it was gonna rattle apart...this is the third one so I gotta fix that tomorrow but my first question is how rough is your engine idle and how rough does the engine get when you rev it up past 2500rpms...the reason i ask is because I am pretty sure my engine is running real rough and vibrating the mount to the point of breaking...im thinking about video taping my engine vibration at some point to show you guys to see if its really abnormal....well tomorrow i gotta fix it so i might try something new....heres my idea: running my intake elbow into the stock intake box with a cone filter in there, then run plastic hose from the inlet in the bumper up thru the wheel well up to where the resinator hole is to feed the box with cold air....

With my intake if its real cold out and the car hasnt warmed up ill idle just over 1. but it drops down after it warms up...ive never had any issues and i have a coat hanger holding mine on there.

do you have an auto or a manual?

I know mine must vibe a lot- I had my SRI mounted to the stock airbox mount in front of the strut tower and it recently broke one of the welds holding the mount to the tower. :(

try using softer mounts to the throttle body like silicone i havnt had trouble with mine and its been 2 years

well just my luck i shortened my intake to a SRI so i wouldnt need that mount that keeps breaking anymore, plus I was going to add the cold air feed to have a GOAT air intake but didnt get to that....well i fixed the intake and started it up and stepped on the gas a little a low and behold the rattle is still there so now i pull on the throttle cable while im looking for the source and couldnt find it. so i took it to our friends shop to have them check it out because while i was checking it the CEL came on, trying to get it there was a bitch because every once and a while the power would be gone when i stepped on it and the rpms went past 2500rpms. so i get it there and they cant tell what the noise is so they run the CEL and it says knock sensor and there were using something that looks like a stethascope to find the noise and he said it was too loud that it sounds like its coming from everywhere on the engine. so far the guesses are that either the timing belt jumped and its off or the engine is going :shock: just beatiful :roll:

is this a seriuos question or r u just yanking my chain? lol i made it, the intake is fine but its just i dont feel like the hassle with having a CAI any more seeing as i just want it to get me from point a to b and plus i dont feel like making a better mount. id rather just make it a GOAT style air intake, that way i just dont have to jack up my car to get to the filter plus eliminate the mount that keeps breaking. too bad something is really effed in the a with the engine so i couldnt see the difference #-o

hehe, im havin knock sensor issues myself, but mine is related to my neo that i just installed, im workin on it tho... sorry to hear sam, wish u the best of luck!

and the verdict is....(drum roll).... tensioners and belts own me. the timing belt tensioner broke and the timing belt jumped a little causing it to fire a little early causing the knock #-o thats not even the good part, we just changed the timing belt less than 1,000 miles ago and when it jumped the teeth it messed them up so now not only do i need a new tensioner but i need a new belt #-o now to recap like in febuarary i had my accessory belt tensioner break and mess up that belt so we changed the timing belt then too, hence why belts and tensioners own me...word to the wise have your mechanic check your tensioners out real well when you get belts changed

hhhmmmm makes me wonder... maybe my timing belt has jumped, im gonna take my car in and have it looked at now. thanks sam.

just yankin' Sam...Do you want to see close pics of mine to help with your design? I hear ya when you say you don't want to jack up the car when changing the air filter...sounds like it's going to be a pain when I have to clean my filter. I figure I'll do it before summer when I put on the summer rims and tires.

yea i thought u were....yea im tired of haustles with my car, ill leave that for a real project car because its a pain when something goes wrong on ur only car....oh mike ull know if it jumped timing because i could barely get that thing up to the shop, it was loosing power all over the place and couldnt go above 2500rpms...i cant wait til its fixed so i can see wat the SRI feels like. its suppose to be fixed by tomorrow night if they have the tensioner in stock :?

oohhh nvm. my aveo scoots along pretty good. maybe my air maps are a bit lean. well enough with the hi-jack, how much is this gonna run ya?

haha yea dont feel like wasting the money or have the time with college, thats the main reason i need the car because i drive 82.5 miles every monday and friday to go to and from college up in Newark....hopefully i can get the car back wednesday so i can clean the inside out finally (which i was suppose to do yesterday til it took a poo on me) and finish the install of cold air grabber....ill leave the rebuilds for my k-series project car build

figures they dont have the part in stock and it wont be here til thursday...god having no car sucks, especially since i had alot to do this spring break

none yet because i havent started yet...right now i am just planning it all out on paper, but i need to find the chasis i want first in the condition i want it (toyota mr-s)....i hope to start looking this summer is the finances are right, god damn college lol jk but as soon as it does start you guys will def be the first to see pics.

yea the easiest way to get a rwd drive k-series....

...an update got the aveo back up and running with a new belt and tensioner and it rights fine. but i have to say the new sri feels totally different from the old cai and also sounds different (sounds like theres a turbo under there). the power has shifted to low - mid rpm range for up higher in the rpm range which i really like. it has more of a get up and go feeling and i can actually stay with traffic acceleration without going over 3000rpms....all the changes are good for what i want out of the car since I am trying to take more care of the car and not race it like a racecar everywhere so the power down low is good, but the power does die on the top end either it just kind of flattens out a little bit. now to install the "goat" tubing to grab the colder air

CAI = mid-high
