If it was my choice, that is what I would do. This is the wife's daily driver, so I will see what she wants to do. I have built a few engines, and I am pretty sure this would not be a lot more expensive than some of the alternatives. I have yet to find another engine that is less than $1300.

Yeah, I was reading about the 06 engines running around $700... not around here! I will probably either rebuild, or replace the car. If I rebuild, I found an engine kit, minus pistons, for about $400. I have never been a big fan of oversize rings, but just for cleaning up the bore... they should be alright. Based on the used engines I have found, a rebuild might actually be cheaper. If I go that route, maybe shave the head a bit for a touch higher compression... any choices for cams? Something a little more torquey than stock? Would the stock ECM handle a LITTLE bigger cam? I' thinking a little increase in torque would give a little better mpgs on the highway.

Any thoughts on other sources for the engine kit? Ebay is usually NOT my first choice, but I used to work at Oreilly's, and I know they are pretty proud of their engine kits, IF they could even get the parts for an Aveo.

i highly doubt the lose of compression is piston or ring related.. imho.

i think maybe head gasket, more likely a valve issue.. (burned or gummed up)

so you would just need a head gasket kit, and some head work. I would not pay a dealer to do it though.

but Import Performance Parts - Import Performance Engine & Racing Parts carries the proper vauxhall and daewoo parts..

Yeah, I have a guy who can do the job, and do it my way, BUT... her car, her money. She will get it repaired where she has the most confidence. Since it is her car, I want her to be confident in the work.

I want to know if its in how these cars are treated? I mean I hear of all these engine, bent valves, code problems and thankfully my 04 which I bought new in 04 has been just fine up to now ahich is 123k. Now dont get me wrong, I've had to do wheel bearings, and such but all that stuff wasnt until after 100K.

Well, ours was a great car until about 107K, after that? Not so great.
It is not the head, or a valve, it is rings on the number 2 cylinder. I hit all of the parts stores, who get reman engines, nobody, including Jasper and Marshals does a reman engine for the Aveo. Does anyone have a source for a reman longblock?

A friend who owns a salvage yard said he found one for $1200, but is was not low miles.

Whats the possibility of picking up a low mileage engine out of a wrecked Aveo? 06 07 08 Chevy Aveo engine 1.6L 4c 48K miles - eBay (item 200542399536 end time Jan-10-11 13:18:53 PST)

Will this engine work in mine? Mine is an 04. If it will work, I'll have it!

edited to add: I have been told that the longblock for the 04-10 is the same, only the external stuff might be different. Can anyone confirm this for me?

04 to 08 is usable, there a slight changes where you will need to keep some newer components.

i think it is hte way they are treated, keeping up with traffic, not doing regular maintenance, coupled with a 60k mile timing belt.. most people still consider a 60k car new.
