      oil light went on

I have an 04 Aveo The light wnet on and i stopped to check the oil dipstick which was fine. I don't hear any ticking noise which i was told by a mechanic I know the car would make if oil pump is no good, does that sound right? I think it is time to get a new car I have over 150,000 on the car.

Sounds like your oil pressure sensor is shot, but you want to make sure you have pressure before assuming anything. If its just the sensor its extremely easy to fix.

Well, not really... Let say you pay 400$ a month for a new car. At the end of the year, it's 4800$ less in your pocket. If you do 4799$ in repair on your Aveo, you are still 1$ richer. Think about it. Fixing the sensor, the pump and everything else is far less.

IMO, that's a really unprofessional thing for a mechanic to tell you. Does an engine usually tick if the oil pump is bad? Maybe, probably, who the heck knows for sure? And how much damage has already been done by the time you have a chance to get out and hear the ticking? I would stop driving ASAP and get a pressure test (or hang on a new sensor). It most likely is the sensor as Daox already said. But the light looks the same from either a bad sensor or actual low oil pressure. Why take the chance of it being the bad guy (no matter how small), and then wind up having a huge $$ repair?

I played it safe since I am paying AAA i had it towed to the mechanic I know well. When i started the car again to check it the the oil light went off. I am going to have it checked anyway. As far as getting a new car I know either way is going to cost and i like my Aveo but it is getting older so sooner or later it's going to cost me more and more, but I won't buy a new car now. Thanks for your quick replies

I'm surprised it lasted that long. On some of my other cars of Asian manufacture the sender died as early as 40 K.

The oil switch sender switch for the 'idiot light' is a cheap repair, and yes, it is very easy to change.

As long as we've changed our oil regularly and the crankcase is full, there is no reason for panic.
