A manual can get a LOT more than 5 mpg better than the automatic -- the EPA test for manuals handicaps the rating because the test drivers have to follow strict instructions on when to upshift & downshift, and the shift points are NOT economical.

But your results will depend on how you drive. Even if all you do is shift to the highest gear you can use once you get to cruising speed, you'll save a lot more fuel than the EPA rating suggests.
