SEMA 2010 - no Aveo, but they're showing Spark

This is a bit odd.

At the 2003 SEMA show, GM showed off the 2004 Aveo in the form of the green Aveo Xtreme show car:

This year's SEMA show just opened, but Chevy didn't bring the next gen Aveo. But they are showing off a Spark:

I wonder if the reason they didn't show the Aveo is because they're still not sure what they're going to call it in North America.

It's weird because we know the Aveo will be produced & sold in North America next year (maybe with a different name badge on it). But the company has not even confirmed the Spark for this market.

On the bright side, for SEMA 2010, Autoblog is saying:

The next gen aveo will be there next year i would think, maybe the performance divison is developing parts now, hence taking more time?

I would think so too, but... they showed the 1st gen Aveo at SEMA 2003 before the 2004 car was available. I just thought they might do the same thing with the new car. Create some buzz.

Maybe they're afraid of hurting sales of the existing Aveo? IE - people might wait instead of buying something now.

Well maybe it will show up at next years SEMA show.

iirc the first gen aveo was in preproduction during the 2003 sema show, currently gm only has its "prototype" aveos..

Why do they want to sell 2 nearly identical cars. They need to quit messing around and get these things to market.

I cant remember I havent been following this stuff too much but have they even debuted the production Aveo? I thought they have one shown prototypes that were supposedly very close to what is planned to be produced. IF this is the case then this would be why there are no Aveos at SEMA

The Aveo RS is the best looking car I've seen in along time!(can u say Ford Focus RS, not sold in the USA) :( I mean, way nicer than the Fit! We probably won't get it as GM is gona try to push the sales of the Cruze, even tho they are not in the same segment.
And that Spark is awesome! I just may have to adopt that stray little car! LOL :p

Hey everyone! I was lucky enough to check out SEMA yesterday, and let me tell you, as a car enthusiast, I loved every minute!
I was disappointed to not see any Aveos on display this year, but I did see some awesome Camaros, Volts, and the new Spark.
I didn't take too many pics of my experience but I did take a few to share for my chevy heads on here :) I hope to maybe see some of you there next year!

I like that Spark. And really like the classic pickup. (More pics of it in the Autoblog gallery that's linked further up this thread.)

Wonder why they showed the Volt though - was it modified in some way?

The volt did not seemed to be modded out in any way besides the graphic decals and the wheels. I believe they were trying to get the name out on the new hybrid vehicle as its supposed to be avail. to buy sometime next week. I'll be honest, it was probably a good idea on their part, because I honestly never heard of the volt until I saw it. There hasn't been much publicity, none that I've seen anyway.

thats odd, the volt is supposed to be the most anticipated hybrid to come.. even the president sat in one (he doesnt drive).

they had a lot of publicity, but maybe that was bad timing with the bail out, since people dont remember?

As far as I remenber the Volt is not a hibrid it is a fully electric car with a 50 mile range and a $40k price tag!!!!!
Good luck to GM in trying to sell that...LOL

i call it hybrid because even though it is fully electric drivetrain, there is still a gas engine on board, even though it is used as a generator.

oh, and its 50 miles before the engine kicks on, not 50 miles by itself.

plus you get a rebate of 20,000, making it cost 20k, or whatever they are charging

why do you think nissan makets the leaf at 22k as well lol?

150 hp electric motor with Lithium-ion batteries.
80 hp 1.4 liter gasoline engine. (required to use ONLY premium gas!)
fuel tank capacity is 9.3G
3781 curb weigh
MSRP $40.280 FEDERAL REBATES will be UP to $7500 so YOU pay $32.780, that is a long way from $20k, Hunter! And the tax break is only good for the first 200k vehicles sold.
As far as the mileage goes, it will drive UP to 50 miles on the batteries charge, after that the gasoline engine kicks in as a generator producing electricity for the electric motor, the gasoline engine will average betewen 30 to 40 miles per galon. so:
9 galon tank x lets say 35 mpg is 315 on a a tank, than we ad the 50 miles of the electric motor and end up with 315+50=to average of 365miles per tank/charge, divide that per 9 galon tank is only 40mpg total, not impressive to me at all, when I have reached 42mpg on my Aveo with a 1.6 liter engine and don't need to recharge the battery every night at extra cost of $1.50 per charge and it takes 10 hours to fully recharge on a 110V system or 4 hours on a 240V system. Sounds like quite a hassle for 40mpg!
Warrantie on the battery pack is 8 years, and after that, I garantie u, to replace them, it will cost a LOT of money, the Prius cost about 10k to replace the batteries, or u can just scrap it and buy a new one! Talk about 'Disposable' car!
One thing I'll give GM, its a nice looking car, comfortable and considering the weigh of 3781lb 40mpg is really good when our Aveo has to weigh about half that to get the 40mpg.
Bottom line is we have the technology to do much better than this, Diesel is clean and cars like the VW tdi average 50+mpg, natural gas is also cheaper, 0% emissions and used in many countries with success, Methanol? I'm not a fan as I grow up around that fuel in Brasil my birth place, why? it is very hard on the engine(eats and rusts everything) but is easy and cheap to produce and low emissions. Methane gas? I'm not familiar with, Hydrogen? won't be here for a good long, long time. I rather have a Spark econobox witch is expected to average betewen 50 and 60mpg than a overpriced, overcomplex car like the Volt. At 40k the hassle of recharging it every night, it is not for me, and I bet I speak for thousands and thousands of americans.
GM sayd a while back 'The VOLT will save GM', that statement was also acompanied by the statement 'It is predited it will take 10 years to sell enough VOLTS for GM to recuperate what it has invested in the car'! LOL...
Ayone here thinks hibrids and electrics sell good? just take a drive to the car dealers and see how many of those they stock compare to convencional engine vehicles, around 1%! So, I think they are not selling like HOT TAMALES! LMAOL. :D
Hopefully when the Volt sales BOMB (and they will, believe me!), GM will have learn enough from that car to bring us something trully amazing...

people spent and still spend a silly amount of money for a prius, why not buy better hybrid like the volt?

there are 20,000 rebates though, it is a smaller program I think

keep in mind how often do you drive more than 50 miles in a day? the volt (getting charged at night) is really just en electric vehicle first, an owner could go for a long time without the engine needing used (and it will probably be seized while still under warranty).

The car was built on the basis that there is a big "demand" for electric cars, but supposedly no one buys them because they cant travel (so you would need an around town car and a second car for highway trips) the volt solves that issue, its an electric car that in you normal life will never need gas but also you can hop in it to drive 1000 miles to go on vacation. You could never do that before in an electric car.

I see ur point. I never look at it that way since I drive more than 50 miles back and fourth to work. Still I preffer a diesel or a car with a small gasoline engine. I hate over complicated/overpriced things when there are better and simpler alternatives. I stand by my view, the VOLT will BOMB, it will sell like the Prius far and apart, I don't know anyone that would pay $25k for a Prius, even less people that would pay $30k+ for a Volt.
90% of people that spend that kind of money is either looking for Performance(Civic R, Camaro,Challenger), work(Dodge Ram, Tundra) a SUV(Denally, Expedition) or luxury(Merc., BMW). Off course, some of those cost more than 25/30k.
Where does the Volt fit? No where.
The sales of the Volt will be weak, like the other hibrids.
Like the Prius and the rest of its ilk, it will just be a statement vehicle for financially secure hypies, tree huggers and Liberals...
And in 8 years or less, when the batteries take a dump and need to be replaced at probably more than the devaluated vehicle, the Volt like so many much more expensive pieces of equipment(like some oil field equipment that the parts cost so much is not worth to fix) will go to the scrap yard...

thats the groups of people honda and toyota try to net up (the hippie civic commerical), well most of the time, but GM wants to grab some of those liberal import fans as well

people will buy the leaf so that polar bears will hug them, but have to walk when their car dies in less than 40-45 miles, why not buy the volt?

they will sell though, people bought the prius and insight, and paid a lot more for them

keep in mind too, this is a "luxury" segment car as well, no holding back on features to go green.

Yeah, I agree, a few will sell, but the overhall number of hibrids sold so far is minuscule and they have been around for years, how many Prius I see everyday? usualy about 1 every week or so, out of about 1000+cars I pass everyday, so in reality they are light years away from competing with petrol engines, and theres a possibility in the years ahead something better will came along, like natural gas, and this hibrids like other oddities of the car world will fade into the shadows of automobile history... As far as I'm conserned 'FAREWELL!'
