sound like the end of the shift selector is slipping, you could either tear it apart and see, or buy a new one.

To verify it is the shifter assenbly, get under the hood, see where the arm is that runs through the gears, and verify you can click it into all positions while running if able. TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS NOT TO RUN OVER YOURSELF!!
