Suggestion for the moderators
I enjoy this list and appreciate the way that you guys that run it do it so well. :D
Lately I've been reading the various threads about fuel economy, and nearly always it is difficult to understand the stats mentioned, because a good number of the participants here are in Canada where liters, imperial gallons and kilometers are at odds with the American measurements of US gallons and miles. It gets very confusing without translation.
Sure, I could go 'do the math' to convert the numbers, but probably most people here (myself included) are probably not inclined to expend the effort to translate it completely and join in the discussion.
Is there any way to provide us with a program that would automatically or easily translate these measurements into a standard benchmark for comparison? :?
Another simple request is when we here are discussing fuel economy that we please state at the outset whether we have a manual or an automatic transmission. It can make a lot of difference, and it becomes a bit of a nuisance when it's left unsaid, often leaving the need to constantly inquire. :|

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
i've come to the conclusion that since those damn canadians post __ per 100 km, the lower the number in the blank the better. but its ass backwards because it could at least be km per liter...
:P
and i'll just say it one more time. damn canadians.
only thing worse than canadia is alaskans.

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
If he is still planning on moving to Seattle/Tacoma area, he will be done with Alaska... You will miss it though, rain all year 'round is not as fun as snow all year 'round... 8) I miss snow myself.
But to answer the original question, just use this link (keep it bookmarked or something): http://www.google.com/landing/searchtip ... conversion
Or you could have a google window open (in chrome browser you can just start typing in the address bar and it uses that as a google search window)

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
I still plan to move to WA in a year or 2. Not sure where yet though, thinking Port Orchard, or Graham or Aberdeen. Any opinions?
-
Re: Suggestion for the moderators
It depends. Where will the job site be? Do you prefer cities or small towns? Military neighbors or college kids? Do you want to pay toll charges every time you leave town? (Port Orchard). Graham and Aberdeen are pretty far away from the big city but that's not always a bad thing.

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
My other terminal is in the Tacoma Port. With medium traffic from Graham to my terminal in the port it's only about a 30 minute drive if you take 161 Meridian the whole way. Port Orchard is about a 30 minute drive as well. Gig Harbor is really close too, but houses are expensive there. Something to consider though.

Just wait until they start using gallons/ 100 miles in the States :). I predict you'll welcome that with open arms!

I'll try.
Being in the US I'm unaware - is Canada now using liters or imperial gallons, or what?

that will go over about as well as the metric system.
-
Re: Suggestion for the moderators
Officially Canada uses L / 100 km.
Automotive media often still report mpg in imperial gallons though, which is what was used before going metric.

Only a handful of countries don't use the metric system... That's how "well it goes over".

Even though metric system makes more sense... if the wrench you grabbed is 17mm and it's too small, you should grab... 18mm!!! and 10mm make a cm... 10cm make a decimeter... 10 decimeters make a meter... 1000 meters make a kilo meter...
1000 grams make a... kilogram!... 1000 kilograms make a ton... so half a ton is 500 kilos.... now try doing all that in inches....
Oh, and how about a celcius measuring system... 0 degrees - the water is frozen. 100 - it's boiling...
The rest of the world is using it... but we "stick to our 250 year traditions"... or whatever other excuse everyone has. Metric/Celcius makes more sense.

thats kind of what i meant.
i like the metric system, i build frames etc with metric tolerances.. use metric tools. prefer metric tape measure. even the metric clock is nice :P
its still more of a concept though because unseen distances i dont know how many km are between here and there etc.. americans in general are just too stubborn and stupid to switch.. i think most younger generations could, the population as a whole though, not so sure.

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
maybe i am showing my age because i remember when the metric system was reintroduced in schools to counteract "a nation at risk"?

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
I'm in Canadia and I used MPG for the longest time, just seemed to make sense. I started using L/100KM now and it definitely takes some getting used to. I do think that KM per L would make more sense than L/100KM though.
I always use the US measurement for gallons, there's no point otherwise.
The main issue I see with people reporting their mileage is in the method used to calculate the mileage! They "claim" however many miles per gallon, and they just insist that it's true because they feel that way.
The kind of tool we need would have to require how many gallons or liters were used, and how many miles or kilometers were driven, and then display the results in MPG and L/100KM or whatever.
If the ACTUAL usage of how many gallons/liters vs the ACTUAL distance in miles/kilometers CANNOT be provided, the claim of how many MPG or L/100KM is pretty much null and void is it not??

I'm still confused. I understand "miles per gallon". To me that seems simple and straightforward. We don't express it in quarts or gallons used per 100 miles (or for that matter per 100KM, which is about 60 miles). It's a totally different method of calculating and expressing things, and it makes it difficult to translate one system to the other. :?

not really, the lowest mpg cars for this model year is like 3 of the lambos rated at liek 9,11,13 a piece, though, they tax the hell out of the because of it lol

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
That was a good article... Weird at first that 10mpg to 20mpg is more of an improvement than 25 to 50, but makes sense...

Re: Suggestion for the moderators
you fool, toyota will disagree with its 52mpg prius which is saving the world, and keeping its drivers safe. even though the battery leads to more pollution than other cars, it matters not, 52mpg!!!!! and toyota!!!!!
enjoy breaking down in your domestic car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol... however, if you look at the entire life cycle of the Prius, from birth to recycling, it most likely pollutes less than a regular car. Just like a paper cup vs styrofoam cups. Believe it or not, over the entire life cycle of the cups, the styrofoam pollutes less.
You can't just look at one part of the car's life cycle or a certain part to say it pollutes more or less than another. The Prius' battery, when toast is still worth $$$. You'll be hard pressed to find it in a landfill.
-
Re: Suggestion for the moderators
it depends on how you look at pollution, that battery will probably still be around when dinosaurs are ruling the earth again.
i actually like the prius, only because it was the car that was "cool" enough to get suv driving hipster yuppies into a more efficient vehicle.
I honestly feel like if the whole SUV push didnt occur, the us would have been better off. pushing more fuel consumption etc. plus that is part of the blame for the need of the bail out, and it is what got many aveo owners here with the cash for clunkers.. the only defense anyone has for the suvs fuel economy is its still better than the cars in the 70s.. but to me thats crap. I tire of seeing one person driving around in an 8-12 mpg suv for status when that is all that is on the road during rush hour. if all those people were driving even v6s us fuel consumption would drop.. imagine if they drove 4 cylinders.
Now i am a car lover and have built gas guzzlers. but i would not sit in traffic with them every day.
I also understand the need for larger cars when there is a need.
what was this topic about again?

How are the priuses doing on installing the speaker to "imitate engine sound" so pedestrians pay more attention to them and don't get ran over? 8)

I say let them look left and right. If that doesn't work then they should get run over. Life's tough.
