I've shredded a timing belt on a metro and luckily it was a SOHC non-interference engine, but what about the Aveo? Do the valves cross paths?

Valves and pistons would go smashy smashy, then you swear like a sailor.

      What he said.
Even tho the valves cross paths, when the timing belt shreds, the stops both intake and exhaust valves from moving so they wouldn't hit. It is the piston slapping them that you are worried about. New valves, pistons, rings, headgasket, and head studs is what WILL need to be replaced. You also run the chance of messing up the head, valve seals, valvetrain, new Cat due to pieces of valves, or even a new block.

      Re: timing belt

That isnt really that bad. Changing out the water pump is a good idea since you will be in there anyways. It does not hurt to ask about an oil pump as well.

      Re: timing belt

I think an oil pump would be kinda overkill.

      Re: timing belt

Changing it while you are in there is not such a bad idea because if it does go bad, you have to remove the timing belt again to get there. The labor on an oil pump change will end up costing ~$300-$400

I guess it's up to the individual. Being a lifetime part, I personally wouldn't change it.

aveo_tuner, we all know we get ugly things like valve bendage and head problems with a broken timing belt. for an interference motor its like getting the itchies with measles. it just goes without saying.
