Water pump too? (w/timing belt change)
Just wondering if people also change the waterpump out on their first timing belt change.
I'm thinking of skipping it, just putting in a new gasket, and changing it at the next belt change, which will be at 120k miles.
I think you have to do a ton extra to get the water pump off...
Remove the valve cover and cam sprockets...
Much more than I want to get into for just a timing belt change.
Are these pumps notorious for seizing up before 120k ?
Re: Water pump too? (w/timing belt change)
do it, i think it costs like $40, and it should unbolt and pull straight out (99% of the time)
an extra hour and $40 is worth the prevention of a over heating.
Re: Water pump too? (w/timing belt change)
If its that easy I will, but i think the service manual is saying the cam gears and the rear timing cover gotta come off.
Re: Water pump too? (w/timing belt change)
I would say you should be fine, but if you're gonna change the gasket anyways you might as well just change it dude. Mine on my s10 didn't get changed until I built a new motor for it at 134K. It was leaking a little bit for about 1000 miles before that and I live in the frigid cold. You should be able to make it to 120K, but don't risk it.

i wish i could tell you for sure, but the 09 has a different engine.
most cars i have worked on design the engine so the water pump is service-able though. so it should be easy.
the manual is also written with only one complete tear down, so even if they removed the gears etc.. that might not be actually necessary.

i have never seen a water pump used as the timing belt tensioner...

I even bought the same belt he used.
He re-used the waterpump, just used a new gasket, and thats what I'm gonna do.
A new water pump is another 50 to 100 bucks away, and you have to remove more stuff to change it, so I'm gonna wait till next time.

Actually, the tensioner is a separate, but fixed, spring-loaded pulley componet. The water pump is rotated for proper adjustment. There's no need to mess with the cam timing gears.

The water pump is under a lot of tension, so it's prudent to go ahead and replace it. Well, that's what I planned to do before a truck came along and totaled my car! Anyways, why open it up twice? I paid $73 for a new pump from Rock Auto, along with the Gates belt, idler pulley, tensioner, new metal thermostat housing assy and hoses. If you're still riding around with that crappy plastic housing, change it soon.

If I can squeek the pump out as shown in the write-up then yeah I guess I should throw on a new one.
If I can only fish a new gasket on the back of it then so be it.
Freaking local auto part stores are rip off priced...found one unknown brand at napa online for $135!!!!
And another AC delco one from RockAuto.com for 40.03 shipped to my door.
-- Sorry to hear your car got totalled dude. Going to get another?
I didnt opt to buy your timing belt stuff... but I might be interested in the metal thermostat housing.

I ran out of $$, so ended up with a '97 Buick LeSabre, actually a really nice car and I get 30mpg hwy. The waterpump 'gasket' is an o-ring. I'm willing to part my parts, so to speak. : )
Re: Water pump too? (w/timing belt change)
Right...O-ring.. I ordered that (.75c) and The Contitech timing belt kit for 101.75 from www.partsgeek.com
If I go buy the waterpump it'll probably come with a o-ring too.
The service manual mentions something about a grease for the o-ring called 'lubriplate'.
Is it just grease? wonder if the dealership has it and if it comes in a small tube?
Hmm
Re: Water pump too? (w/timing belt change)
in my experience "greasing" an o-ring usually means so it wont tear for install, and help stay in place. i typically use whatever it is going on. straight coolant for the cooling system, oil for the oil system etc. and never had any problems. i have also used ultra black to hold them in place if they fall off a lot trying to get a part into a tricky place..
