I'm due for an oil change, previously I was just going to the dealer and it was something like $40 or $45 but it was whatever oil they put in, I didn't even think to ask. I know some people may be proponents of Synthetic and others stick to regular oil (well it's definitely cheaper).
I am thinking about going synthetic myself, I never have but know some people who have and swear by it.
My question then is, how to choose which oil to get?
IMO there really isn't that much difference. Theres no real king of the oil world. If you want to run synthetic, it will free up a tiny amount of horsepower and it will allow you to run longer between changes (10k+ miles). If you stick to conventional you loose that little bit of HP and have to change the oil sooner.
Personally, I mostly run synthetic and change the oil and filter around 10k miles.
How many intervals have you passed, any downside or negative effect of waiting 10k?
Any difference in how good of mileage you get using synthetic?
I've gone 15k on synthetic before on a different car. But, I also sent my oil in to be analyzed to see if theres any abnormal wear and there wasn't.
The mileage improvement is going to be very small. You probably won't even be able to tell there is a difference.
I forgot to mention that I had a nightmare last night. I was going to someplace to get my oil changed, and they wanted to charge me $300. After bitching about that, they said ok ok $100. Then I said, ok I'm going to check my prices and I left.
It was a weird dream.
Any recommendations on oil filters?
I'd use a better filter for longer oil change intervals. However, I've heard of a guy running the cheapest Fram filter for 25k miles and getting an analysis back and it was fine. He said he might go 30k on the next filter. I'm not sure how many times (if any) he changed the oil during that time. Like I said, I just stick to doing everything at 10k.
I use 5W 30 in the winter and 10W 40 in summer I use High Mileage oil for my car because it has 92215 miles on it. I want to take good care of it.

I use Royal Purple 5W30. I have to order it up here though, so when I forget and don't have any I use Mobil 1 Synthetic. I swear by both. I grew up always using Mobil 1 Synthetic. Take a look at how many professional NASCAR teams use Mobil 1 over anything else and that will tell you all you need to know. Just my .02.

Haha, touche'. Seriously though, I remember the dealer here asking me what kind of oil I wanted in my car and I asked "What does GM recommend for the Vette'?" He says Mobil1, then it's good enough for the Aveo. I've been using it for years though on all my cars, I just recently started using Royal Purple about 2 years ago.Quote:

I always use Castrol GTX regular oil. my dad always used it in his 1990 geo metro and he got 308,000 miles on it. the motor still is in working order, we still have it. (along with another 1992 geo metro convertible lsi) the reason why it died was the subframe was rotted completely through and the whole car would turn when you gave it gas and also when you braked. But for me thats was all the proof i needed to keep using castrol GTX
I use mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic and the purolater pure one oil filter.
This time around, I found an old discontinued Amsoil filter here at the shop and used a blend of Motomaster Formula One, Motomaster Supreme and Suzuki 5w30 API SM oil. Had to make room in the storage.
O'Reilly Auto Parts has 5 quarts O'Reilly full Synthetic motor oil--- (mobile 1)--- and a mobile 1 oil filter for $17.99 .i switched for added fuel economy. :mrgreen: not sure how long the special runs.
Well I was doing the oil changes at the dealership but a month ago I switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and filter since my boyfriend uses that oil on his Dodge Stratus R/T and I've heard it is Mobil 1 its pretty good but the only downside its that cost me around $80 every 3000 miles.
if your running synthetic, you can easily wait until 10000 miles to change your oil. Even with conventional pushing 5000 is ok, if you do it in a good time frame (like < 3 months) and check its color etc..
Surprisingly for myself I put only around 2-3k on my full synthetic oil within last 5-6 months (I put close to 15k on my other car though)... Should I change it since it's been in there for almost half a year already? I'm thinking of doing it since this is the first oil change it had (now it has 5w-30 AMSOil in it)... and I'm thinking about changing it soon because of the time the oil has been in the engine, not because of miles. What is the recommended interval time wise?
Usually if that was my case I'd change it, however some people push it up to 6K or 10K but thats too long by comparing it to 3K so I won't have to worry and a good peace of mind.
My personal opinion is around 6 months. Moisture can build up in synthetic just like conventional. But if the time you drive it, you can get it up to operating temperature and send all the moisture vapor into the intake via the pcv system it will last longer..
Maybe someone who buys into it more will chime in.
Ok you guys'll probably be barking at me for what I'm about to reveal, having only lately read quite a bit on oil change :(
Ok here's how it went: My Aveo 1.4 LT Sedan has gone through around 28600 mi... The first owner had the oil changed when it had roughly 21800 mi, missing an oil change session according to Chevy Service. Since I find the service at Chevy repeatedly unbearably slow, I've decided to have the oil change today at a friend's that does high-performance tuning, mods, repairs, drift & drag shows etc. They filled the engine with Bardahl Pulsar-G 20W-50. :O I imagine their reason would be due to the availability of the oil in the shop; they handle turbo-charged cars, especially for high-level drifting purposes. Additionally, the weather here in the Philippines is year-round tropical HOT! They've also changed the filter with an Australian brand meant for a variety of cars including a range of Chevy cars like the Aveo... It says it guarantees 96% filtering power or something?
Chevy Service informed that they use 5W-30, if I remember rightly -- the same recommended in the manual... If I'm not mistaken, the manual recommended 10W-40 for hot climates. I guess the only source that could give me some comfort would be this. Accordingly, on the same level with 5W-30, 20W-30 is suitable for hot climates... I've read elsewhere that long-term usability of the oil is better and that the car should handle better under heavier loads...
So, what say you?

The step to 10w-40 would be ok. but 20w-50 is quite a jump, how hot is your climate?
Around 88 degrees F but with the humidity it get seriously hot! Temperatures have even exceeded 100 degrees!

The engine doesn't "feel" the humidity the way people do. 88F is 88F - no humidex applies.
That's some thick oil you've got in there, I'd say.
@petrified.rabbit: most of the days throughout the year it's like that yeah... Rainy seasons can cool down to approx. 75F...
@MetroMPG: Very thick, as I've checked... drove the car for like an hour and so far no probs... in fact, since the oil's new, albeit thick indeed, the drive feels somewhat better... I sure hope those guys at my friend's shop know what they were doing!
I buy whatever's cheapest at the auto parts store. It's usually Quaker State 5W30 tho, with a Fram filter. Today i bought the deal at advance for 13.99, 5 quarts of quaker state and a purolater filter. I also bought some Engine Restorer and Lubricant to try out. We'll see how that goes even tho I've heard nothing but good things about it from friends.
I've stuck to whatever the dealership puts into it. I get my oil changes free for life (as long as the dealership sticks to it's current ownership), so I can't really complain all that much. IDK what I'd use if I didn't get those free oil changes though.
Castrol GTX High Mileeage 5w30 and pureone filter for 7500 OCI. Thes cars are so easy on oil I feel bad dumping it. It comes out same thickness as the oil I put in, just darker. Used regular GTX till about 80K.
I've been using Amsoil 5w30 since the second oil change along with a Napa Platinum filter. At 180,000 km and it uses no oil with 10,000 km change intervals. Engine cranks well at -40 without using the block heater. Cost is double of dino oil, but so is drain interval - so overall cost is the same and I have better engine protection.
Been using Pennzoil Platinum in my cars since I've been driving. However, I am probably going to start using some high-mileage stuff in the Aveo come it's next oil change.
Whatever's cheap goes in the Aveo, Mobil 1 for everything else.

IMO Now a days, Cheap lubricants doesn't necessarily mean leaser quality of the petroleum products, as long as you know who's oil is in the bottle.Quote:

I run Amsoil in mine and couldn't be happier.
I run the Valvoline Max-Life Semi-Synthetic 10w-30, the car runs and sounds better with the slightly thicker oil. I have ran it for about a year with no problems, even during the HORRID winter we had last year. Since I mostly do in-town driving, I change it about every 5k.
It's always as clean as the day I poured it in when I do. lol
