Here's my opinion on this (hey, it's a forum, so everybody gets to have an opinion, right?).
The Aveo is toward the bottom of the price scale. So the buyers are either CASOBs like me, or folks who don't have a spare $ for something in a higher price range. I also believe that many Aveo buyers are fairly young folks who may be just starting out. Without meaning to offend any particular group, I think it's fair to say that many young adults haven't learned yet how important good vehicle maintenance is, and in particular oil changes at the required intervals. And it goes beyond maintenance. I routinely see drivers ahead of me slam into most of the potholes in the road. For many this doesn't register until a few big suspension/steering repair bills show up. When repair guys keep on saying "lots of potholes this year", eventually maybe it clicks in.
And to be perfectly honest, I didn't understand early on how important all of this stuff is either.
Now if you take all the people who don't know (or don't care) about maintenance, along with those who simply can't afford it (or be willing to cut something else out), it amounts to a recipe for failure.
So, out of all the blown Aveos in the boneyard, how many were well-maintained? I'm guessing maybe none. And Patrick - are you the original owner of your '05? If not, then you probably bought into someone else's poor maintenance. But if you are the original owner, and did the proper maintenance, then it sounds like you got a lemon. And yes, there are lemons (in EVERY make). I just don't believe there are as many factory-bad Aveos as the above posts might make it sound.
My '05 has 125K on it, and runs like a clock. One timing belt and another coming soon, the standard bad plastic thermostat, brakes, and tires and that's it. But changing oil on time is a religion for me, and so is avoiding every pothole and bump that I can.
So that's my take - with the exception of isolated bad luck, you basically will reap with your Aveo what you sow.

I live in a city where potholes and cracked roads are as abundant as the air we breathe. I need to replace every major suspension component one can think of. Try doing that with a salary for one person feeding myself, my wife, and 2 kids.

on my 3rd set of tires.
Replaced an O2 sensor at 45,000 miles
flushed and replaced A/t fluid at 50,000 and upgraded spark plugs to platinum. I average 30 mpg with 60% highway and 40% city

Its like mine, i have close to 350,000 km on mine, all ive done are a few timing belts, and everything in there, 2 serpentine belts and an alternator, everytging elses is stock bearings suspension ect. The best advice i can give anyone is once your warranty is up, take your car to a mechanic or do it your self, is to put grease nipples all over the place, i did that and grease em twice a year and havent had a problem yet. I change my oil every 24,000 km and i do oil samples every 100,000k or 60,000 miles.

My aveo is sitting around 97 000 Kms. So just around the 60 000 mile mark for Americans. It has been a good and reliable car and has needed very little in the way of work on it.

I am only the second owner of the car, and I happened to buy it as a close to new car with only 20 000 Kms on the car and it was a few years old at the time.

I had a few small things to fix but they weren't incredibly expensive. Since I had the 04 model there were a few of the early model issues to fix on my car that wouldn't be an issue in later years since they would have the upgraded parts. But even with a couple of small repairs it has been a cheap ride to own and maintain.

Haven't had the chance to go thru this thread yet, FWIW my 08 is about to break 130,000 in the next month or so. I do 100 mi a day 5 days a week. Time to check the timing belt-- again?!?! Need to put up a garage pic so you can all see what I've done to mine so far.

I have a stack of receipts about 2" thick of all normal wear and tear items I've had to replace, and lots of oil and filter change receipts. Still have original exhaust, clutch, alternator, starter, and radiator, although there is a can of Bars-Leak I've used which successfully sealed my heater core failure last winter. I'm just looking to squeak out another winter if possible. Hopefully I've not jinxed myself by typing this post. Just wanted to share my overall satisfaction with my Aveo in the last 6 years. Needless to say I would buy another Korean car in a heartbeat.
06' Aveo 5spd, 2 AC units, Thermostat Housing, Valve Cover, oil changes and 196k miles strong. Starts every morning no matter what the weather.

My 2009 just hit 178K miles as I brought her for her oil change last saturday with a little planning. Still have the 2135 code that the dealer keeps pushing the wiring harness replacement to the tune of big money in my mind. I dont see why this is not a recall type thing. wiring harnesses are not normal wear and tear type items. It usually goes away in the summer so we will see. My wife wont even ride with me as it must always be reset. When toyota bought my tacoma back from me with the frame rust issue I said chevy or ford would never do that !!!!!! they would say buy another frame !!! Otherwise running ok
