Here's my opinion on this (hey, it's a forum, so everybody gets to have an opinion, right?).
The Aveo is toward the bottom of the price scale. So the buyers are either CASOBs like me, or folks who don't have a spare $ for something in a higher price range. I also believe that many Aveo buyers are fairly young folks who may be just starting out. Without meaning to offend any particular group, I think it's fair to say that many young adults haven't learned yet how important good vehicle maintenance is, and in particular oil changes at the required intervals. And it goes beyond maintenance. I routinely see drivers ahead of me slam into most of the potholes in the road. For many this doesn't register until a few big suspension/steering repair bills show up. When repair guys keep on saying "lots of potholes this year", eventually maybe it clicks in.
And to be perfectly honest, I didn't understand early on how important all of this stuff is either.
Now if you take all the people who don't know (or don't care) about maintenance, along with those who simply can't afford it (or be willing to cut something else out), it amounts to a recipe for failure.
So, out of all the blown Aveos in the boneyard, how many were well-maintained? I'm guessing maybe none. And Patrick - are you the original owner of your '05? If not, then you probably bought into someone else's poor maintenance. But if you are the original owner, and did the proper maintenance, then it sounds like you got a lemon. And yes, there are lemons (in EVERY make). I just don't believe there are as many factory-bad Aveos as the above posts might make it sound.
My '05 has 125K on it, and runs like a clock. One timing belt and another coming soon, the standard bad plastic thermostat, brakes, and tires and that's it. But changing oil on time is a religion for me, and so is avoiding every pothole and bump that I can.
So that's my take - with the exception of isolated bad luck, you basically will reap with your Aveo what you sow.
