2005 Aveo Hatch Auto -- Solid Engine Light ?? without scanner?

Hi all. After weeks of searching for a car I could afford -- and not have to take to the garage right away (gotta get to work) -- I got a 2005 Aveo Hatch, Auto. It's a car the mech flipped for resale basically, just passed inspection, but driving it home, the Check Engine Light beside the clock stays on.Is there a way to retrieve the Code without a scanner ? (PT Cruisers let you gig the ignition 3 times to get it)Appreciate any help.Jim

Autozone or advance will read the codes for you for free and frankly I would have a quick word with the mechanic that "flipped" it.

      good luck

No. You can’t read the code without a scanner. There are inexpensive scanners available, otherwise some parts stores will read codes for free…
Since the last time the timing components are not known get them changed ASAP. You don’t want your new purchase to be nothing but scrap.

Yes, change the timing belt. The car has what is known as an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks on these cars, the valves are usually messed up. Maybe it has recently been changed but I wouldn't suggest taking a chance.
