I have floated around this web site for months now and I find it to be informative and helpful with maintainin my 2007 avveo, so bare with the new guy..
I have 2007 ave who's engine life might becoming to an end. Can I swap a 2010 aveo engine into 2007 body? Or is it better to have the engine rebuilt? Thanks.
is your Aveo a Hatchback or a Sedan? because with the Sedan, the Ecotec engine's wiring will be a lot simpler to take care of because of it being already set up for the GMLAN CAN Bus.Quote:

So what makes you think the engine is on the way out? If you're the original owner and have done reasonably timely oil changes, it would be an unusual thing to have a dying engine. Or perhaps the timing belt broke, or you had some other major problem? How about a compression and/or leak down test - have you done one of those yet?

Trying to look at my options, my vehicle will be inspected by a reputable mechanic Wednesday, its sputtering, no power and using lots of fuel, timing belt was change about 80,000 miles ago along with a tuneup ect. I'm approaching 190,000 real quick. It's been well maintained, regular oil changes, new rotors. It has had nothing major go wrong and has been one tough little car. The only thing not service regularly (excluding topping off the fluid) no filter/oil change in the transmission. I'm to cheap to put $15,000 on a new car when I could shell out $2000 or $3000 short term, I'm just cheap.
Although the mileage is on the high side, with regular oil changes there is no reason to believe there is anything internally wrong with the engine. But if you want some reassurance about that, have your mechanic do a compression test. Spark plugs is the first suspect for misfire, followed by wires, particularly if the common valve cover gasket leak has created an oil bath for the plug end of the wires. But there are a number of other possible misfire culprits as well.
You do however need another timing belt, and the DIYers here normally change the 2 pulleys and water pump at the same time. Although this may add quite a bit if you're paying shop rates, it's highly recommended and advisable to change those parts.
You should get new fluid into the tranny asap. Do not power flush - just pull the drain plug and replace the 2 or so quarts via the dip tube. Try to get that done at least 2 times in the very near future. Having never changed the fluid, 3 or 4 swaps would be better than just the typical 2.

I'm assuming (and certainly hope) the mechanic didn't do a power tranny flush. If so, I recommend that you drain 2 quarts via the plug, and back in through the dip tube. Do this a few weeks, until the fluid looks good. That will at least give you a chance to extend the life of this tranny for as long as possible. Maybe the damage has already been done and it's too late, but a few quarts of fluid is not a big expense, and it only takes a few minutes to do one of these fluid swaps. It's a small investment with potentially a large gain.Quote:

Thank you for the reply, yea my mechanic said blew broke on the passenger's side near the front of the engine. The oil leak has been there longer than I thought, when the car was on the lift I could see just how bad the damage was. The oil trail went all the way back to transmission (motor mount) mount destroying the rubber on the mount. So after the valve cover gasket I'll have to hit the engine with degreaser and clean it up. I'll have to replace the mount later on. On top of the motor the oil leaked from the drive side of the valve cover. I never did locate just where it was leaking from near the coil pack. I'll wait till the next weekend to replace the tranny fluid. I'm tempted to replace the fluid, drive around a bit and keep changing the fluid till I have gotten rid of the old fluid. The A/T fluid does not smell burnt if that means anything, again, thanks for the reply.
I have looked all over the place, hell I even call the chevy service dept (who seemed to be annoyed with my questions) and I can't find any information on a cobalt engine swap, or any engine swap with a 2007 chevy aveo. I have no idea where to find this information.Quote:

I appreciate your suggestions. I am a small shop owner and am a qualified mechanic. I have considered all viable options as well as costs of each and time to do each. The most cost efficient route is a swap. And is also the best route to go in regards to my customer and his abilities financially. What i am in need of is someone with knowledge/experience specifically in this situation to share their knowledge with me. I already know the engine will fit. And i already know the transmission will bolt to it. There arent a huge amount of difference in the two engines. But there are definitely differences. I believe taking the whole engine bay harness and ecm from the donor car is the route to take, but i would like someone with knowledge/experience specifically in this scenario to weigh in.Quote:
