The car is nearing 60k and I would like to change the fluid... not really sure how. Anyone done it? Anyone have a manual you can scan the pages or something for me?

Should be like any other manual. Should have two plugs. One at the top on the side, and one on the bottom (usually on the other side)
Pull the bottom plug to drain, pull the top plug to drain it a little faster.
When it is done draining, put the bottom plug back in. Attach a small hose to your gear oil, and pump it into the top hole until it starts to drip back out. Then put the top plug in.
4 wheels, 4 doors, 4 cylinders, 8 speakers, and 1 loose nut on the steering wheel driving the car!

You care to show me a picture of the plug? I seem to be having a hard time finding it.
I believe there are only 2 plugs on top of the tranny, you have to unbolt the tranny fluid pan to get all of the fluid out
Manual transmissions don't have fluid pans!! GM doesn't recommend changing the fluid. Gm sells a manual trans fluid you have to use. I am pretty sure it isn't straight gear lube. I had a 94 camaro that had a 6 speed manual trans and it used auto trans fluid!! :P

a lot of the newer manuals take ATF. but i believe the discussion on the aveo already decided it takes gear oil?
i know vw 020's are supposed to take gear oil, but GM syncromesh improves response. Anyone want to try that with the aveo?
i mean it "might" just blow up your tranny, but it might improve performance too, and its OEM to the manufacturer.
Gear oil (75w90) is recommended...I wouldn't trust ATF in there. The only other fluid I would try would be TGH fluid, which is basically tractor gear oil. It's thicker than the ATF, but thinner than gear oil.
As per wikipedia: "75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil"
EDIT: Upon further reading TGH shouldn't be used... It isn't compatible with the type of gears in the final drive.

The D16 manual transmission on an Aveo DOES have a pan, and it has to be unbolted to drain the fluid. It takes ~2 quarts of 75W-85 GL-4. When I changed mine I couldn't actually get the pan off (making the spare gasket I bought useless) but the fluid will still drain out the bolt holes. I refilled it with Redline MT-90, which is 75W90 GL-4. Actually getting the fluid back in was a massive pain in the butt as there's not much room to work with around the filler hole.
There's a trick to unbolting the pan. I believe a bolt is hidden inside the transmission which is removable from the rubber boot located on the side of the transmission.
