attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
turn your radio off...... close all your windows..... after 80km/h or 50mph put your car in 5th gear....... slowly accelerate and listen carefully for humming or vibration at around 95 km/h or 55 mph.... my car was 3 days old when I finally took it on the highway......
I am experiencing an intermittent vibration/humming noise only in 5th.... not in 4th or any other gear.... my car now has 4500 kms on it..... and the dealer has ordered me a new tranny...... and I had to keep going back..... I wouldn't settle for the answer " it's a bit noisy.... what do you want from an entry level vehicle....... you should've bought an SX4"
I don't think so........ I listen very carefully to my car........ there could be a few ppl out there that listen to the tunes or love their exhaust a little loud.... DO THIS TEST !!!
if your tranny goes after the warranty...... you're easily looking at about $3500
Steve btw... for ontario ppl soozookey of brampton sux !!!!!

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
i dont get any humming....then again i have no sound insulation and i have an exhaust, but the dealer is right...what do you expect for a cheap $10k korean car?? i wouldnt be worried about it, my car makes a couple of noises but nothing to get worried about, its just the quality of the parts used to build an economy car.

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
my car mermers in fifth above 80 mph.. sounds kind of like exhaust putting, but more like the clutch slipping or not enough fluid in the tranny like gears spinning... it starts low gets lowered and then stops (without knowing a better way to say it) at about 10 beats per second.

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
Mine has been doing this since I got it. It only happens between 50-60mph, constant speed. Only one other person has noticed it while riding with me in my car, its very quiet. My car turned 15k miles today, and the sound is the same, maybe quieter compared with when it was new. It really isn't that loud, and I don't think it is indicative of a problem. I'd characterize the sound as this: 1 second of low soft drone followed by 1 second of no noise. It keeps repeating at this interval. Considering I've got the 5yr/100k mile warranty, if it turns out to be a problem, I'll get it fixed under warranty. I've still got 4 years left of warranty, and by the time its up, I should have plenty of money for a new car.
Its no big deal IMO. The fact that there is a noise doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem. If your dealer tells you that there is a legitimate mechanical problem, let me know. I'll also let you know if I ever have a problem with it.
I've got a 2007 5spd LS Sedan btw.

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
I'd like to start by saying.... that I've owned about 19 cars in my life~~ all manual transmission.... never had 1 that made humming noises in 5th gear.. I do 98% of my driving at 100 km/h or faster......
after taxes and applicable fees my swift was $14000.00....not $10000.00
if I hear a strange intermittent vibration in 5th gear on a brand new car whether I paid 14 or 50 grand for it..... I want it fixed..... I don't live with mummy & daddy..... I work hard for my money.... and having a mortgage and family to support.... this car isn't my "toy" it has to get me to work and back for a few years..... so I am worried about it...... and if it wasn't serious, I don't think my new tranny would be on it's way here from Korea !!!!!
people settling for less than average service or products are the reason that imports are sailing past domestics in all categories~~
just my 2 cents....... Steve

I am in the same boat you are, married, two kids, and my parents like 2000 miles away. you didn't say how old you are. but i am 29 and have owned 56 cars (only counting the legal registered inspect daily drivers) probably 30 or so manuals. But the noise was there on the test drive. I am figuring since it is an overdrive gear, it is either outside the case so you can hear it (MANY VW 5 SPEEDS ARE LIKE THIS) or the gear is cut straighter than the rest of the set, if you have never heard straight cut gears this is still quieter. im not going to know if either answer is correct unless i tear the tranny apart. but i know the mermer my car has is a lot quieter than the some of the hyundai, toyota and focus transmissions i have had as rental cars. and i know that it is highly likely that the noise is present in more cars but you don't hear it because of insulation or other features this car doesn't have. I have heard whining transmissions in brand $60k Escalades. so you are correct: What you pay for a car does not determine quality, (my $40k audi blew the engine and turbo at 38k miles), so regardless if you own an aveo or a ferrari (or both) if you are concerned they should fix it. i just feel my car only has 1800 miles, im not going to take it back for a noisy gear, since it is under warranty, ill just wait for the tranny to go but when i take it for its 3k miles oil change, i will test drive other aveos to see if it is the same and mention it to my mechanic. But I think the big difference in your description and everyone else's is we have said "noise" and you say a "vibration". i have absolutely no vibration associated with it. any vibration i had went away with my lowering springs. so if you still have a vibration after they fix the tranny, i suggest you look into suspension. mine had a slight vibration anywhere from 50-80 mph, but only while hold a constant speed, it doesn't occur if you accelerate or decelerate through it. my lowering springs fixed it.

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
OK so scratch what I wrote before... the noise/vibration is definitely gone. I was going off my memory of a year ago when I first noticed it, and thought the humming it was still there. Cars don't magically fix themselves, right?
Well, after driving around 50 miles today, most of it in the 50-60mph range, I could not duplicate the noise that I remembered from last year. Maybe thats why I didn't think it was a big deal. The humming was pretty quiet to begin with, so I thought I had learned to tune it out. But really, I couldn't hear it at all anymore. So scratch me off the list of those who still have a problem with the 5 spd. Mine probably just needed to be broken in.

I don't think car manufacturers use straight cut gears except for reverse in a manual tranny..

tried this on my way home last night, no tranny noise, just tire and wind noise.

they dont, but some designs might be cut at less of an angle. to prevent slippage of such a small gear..

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
if my car drove like that. it could be as noisey as it wants. but aveosummit would be out of a job cause no one would be able to hear music.

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
I have the same intermittent vibration at highway speeds in 5th gear. After hearing everyone else here say it has happened to them, I figure it's harmless and is just a normal quirk for a dirt-cheap little car. I think the Aveo is the one car that I've ever seen that has more issues with the manual trannys than automatics. Consumer reports really bashed the manuals in these cars for feeling clunky and awkward, and so has every other car critic. It really does have an annoyingly long throw, and feels like shifting a diesel truck instead of a tiny pocket car.
-
Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
yeah. the shifter is annoying, i am still looking for a short shift solution it was available but is not longer in stock anywhere.
-
Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
in fith gear i also hear/feel the hum/vibration. it also happens in my saturn . if you ever notice it happens with almost any thing that has a motor in it, with a constant speed. ie........ computer, fridge, fan, washer. what it is, some thing is just a little off balance .
-
Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
My 04 Aveo also does the same thing at 100Km +(60miles) in 5 gear. It hums for about 1 second, quiet for about another second then hums again. It's not really a noise but a slight vibration that is felt on the floor and gas pedal.
-
Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
I had an intermittent humming in 5th when I got the car, I was about annoyed as you about it but I didn't bother doing anything cause I was so damn broke at the time I could hardly afford to even drive at all.
With time I have either stopped noticing it, or the noise has completely gone away. I do find that kind of strange, but I'm not too worried as this car has been pretty good to me. I am starting to treat her better. :D

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
If the transmission goes, just call the local junkyard.. 250 buks and BAM, a nice (often NEWER) transmission with 1/2 the mileage you had on the old one, sometimes under 30k and you can easily put it in yourself using a jack and stands and a few hand tools in 4-5 hours

Re: attention 5 spd owners...... do this test....
that ^ or you spend what the dealer would charge you and upgrade..
