Aveo 2.0L - [May 19th] Crappy Cellphone Video Up!
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2858
Well finally theres some progress, the engine has been bought and will be shipped to my shop tomorow morning, they will also pick up the car and bring it over there, as far as when work will start, maybe tomorow or friday if they arent too busy, luckily i'm off these 2 days so ill try to document the swap as much as i can if they dont mind be beeing there of course.
Stay tuned!

Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
take lots of pics, and good luck

Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
you can't start a thread like this without at least teaser pictures!

Hahah isnt that true, the engine is a U20SED, same engine exist3nce has in his turbo Optra. Can't really take a teaser pic as I have nothing to photograph, gotta wait till the engine is delivered to the shop tomorow morning.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
so are you just swaping it, and geting it to run nornal, or is the turbo coming later?

I'm gonna start with just swapping it and getting it to run good, turbo might come later on if i have the time and funds for it.
Heres the pics of the engine when it arrived this morning, a good wash and its gonna be just like new, looks like its been well maintained, 74000km (I bought a new Gates timing belt for the motor, gonna change it while we have it on the ground, that way gonna be safe for a while) I was surprised to see a FRAM oil filter on there, those are more expensive then the "usual" ones, a sign that the person who had it musta took take of the motor. Up to now im pretty satisfied, the car is beeing towed in tomorow morning and work should start sometime next week!

Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
thats awesome man, i drove my buddy's optra and that engine is alot better then ours, as for FRAM oil filter its the cheapest one here in Hamilton, Ontario from Canadian tire, and thats the one i use. never gave me any problems.
are you going to take the engine apart for inspection/ cleaning or just put it in? also i don't see a transmission, so im asuming your going to use the aveo's d16 insted of optra's d20?
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Yes im using everything from the 1.6L including the accessories, it's obvious im gonna need a new serpentine belt, but im confused if i should get one for the 1.6L or the 2.0L
The fram filters are cheap around Hamilton? Theyre the most expensive around here, anyhow i think its a better filter then the cheap "white" ones the dealers put in hehe
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
are you planing on keeping the AC, power steering and everything? i didn't know that you can just swap the 2 l in to the place of a 1.6 and keep everything the same. man if this works out, your are going to be my hero.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Keeping a/c, power steering, hopefully everything rebolts to the 2.0, in therory it should, the accesories seem to be in the same place as the 1.6
I still need to know what serpentine belt i need, cant start the work without it
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
I hope you factored in a 2.0L ecu....
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
i think it would be a belt from 2L
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
just put it together, and then measure it for a belt. you can buy belts by length in mm.
the serp belt is the last thing you put on anyhow. and you can start and test run the engine without it.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
in other words, GET TO WORK
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Heh yeah i guess im panicking about the belt for nothing, im sure the shop knows what theyre doing, hopefully its gonna be rolling by the end of next week
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
good luck...im interested in seeing this work out. I am in it to see what kind of gas mileage you get and how the weight difference (if any) effects handling. It would give aveo owners an alternative if their motor goes.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Yes, what ECU are you using? The aveo 1.6 ECU or optra ECU?
D16 will bolt up just fine. But would probably need upgrades if you are going to mod the turbo.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
1.6 ecu with wiring, im missing a starter and a few little things i need to get my hands on, havent worked last week and no idea when ill get back to work, construction suks at this time of year so its on standby for now, car is at the shop
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
so how is the 1.6L going to run the 1.8L? lol shouldnt it be running the 1.8L so you will have the right fuel maps?
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
It's a 2.0L and I believe another person in the forum who did the swap had to use the 2.0L ECM for it to run properly.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Mapping is least of a problem. A simple piggy back will solve the mapping. How about other sensors? Does the 1.6 ecu direct hook up to this 2.0 engine? Same wiring harness for 1.6 ecu and 2.0 ecu? Or all wiring need to change as well.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
wiring harness, and sensors are the same

hmm interesting...proven? or they just look the same?
...yea I have no idea why I said 1.8L...if the harness and sensors are the same then shouldn't the 2.0L ecu work with the aveo?
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Am I wrong about someone having issues with a 1.6l ECU on a 2.0l engine? Was the ECU throwing codes? The connectors might be the same, I'm pretty sure mapping isn't at all the same.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
I'm sure your right, different bore, stoke, different RPM timing. howmuch more is it for the 2.0 ecu?, your going to have to trick the car into thinking it still has the 1.6 or trick the motor into thinking it's still in the optra or what ever it used to be in.
Just my 2 cents, I'll shut up now.
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... It has begun!
Making slow progress, i just got a call from my shop, seems the 1.6L flywheel does not fit the 2.0L, the holes on the 1.6L are smaller and dont line up with the pattern on the 2.0 block so hes gonna call in for a 2.0L flywheel in exchange for the extra manifold i have.
Its hard when you "almost" pionner something hehe so many unexpected things

360 degrees is 360 degrees. even though the bore and stroke are different, the timing would be the same at rpm.. its just the bigger pistons that are moving further. the spark plug timing would be the same, along with the cam shaft position.
the real issue is the fuel curve. some people say to just run bigger injectors or program them to be open longer. but that still does not mean the map will match your needs entirely.. i would think you would need a custom chip, piggy back, standalone or other tune to get the most out of the swap.
but even the stock computer with bigger injectors is a decent starting point.

best way is to get a 2.0L ecu

Re: Aveo 2.0L ... Flywheel doesn't fit
I would get a 2.0 ECU and piggy back it. Since after more modificaion, piggyback is necessary to modify the mapping. And also piggyback can modify the ignition timing, and fuel duty cycle. Can maximise the potential of the hardware. Futhermore, piggyback is transferable to next car, so its worth the investment.
Its interesting if the pinouts at the harness connected to ECU is identical to 2.0 ECU. It means the ECU is same brand and same type, only fuel mapping is different due to cc difference. Which I highly doubt so. I think need to cut and rewire the wires to new ECU.
I am surprise flywheel do not fit. I thought all GM 6 bolt flywheel is the same, only port type or flat type. But 6 bolts are the same. Pls ask your mechanic to turn the flywheel, because the 6 bolts is not equi-distance to each other. 2 bolts are nearest to each other and two bolts are furtherest to each other. Which naked eye cannot spot it. Turn the flywheel around in cycle. It should fit. There is only 4 tpe of flywheel, 6 bolt pot, 6 bolt flat, 8 bot pot, 8 bolt flat GM flywheel. So as long as 6 bolt, it should be fine. In fact I am using 6 bolt Pot flywheel from Opel. Same from GM, it fits also.

piggybacks run about 500$, i don't think he needs to worry about it at this point in the game

1.6l flywheel don't fit on a 2.0l engine, but xiaogary might have solved that one

god my eyes must be going because I completely missed that part.
pioneering does suck thats why its not cheap

Re: Aveo 2.0L ... Flywheel doesn't fit
The 2.0 flywheel is in and the engine is now in the car bolted up the tranny, the rest of the tranny components bolted up without problem, now all i need is the alternator bracket and the front one to bolt the power steering and stuff. I also need a new cat, the 1.6 cat's bolt holes are just a tad off from the 2.0's exhaust manifold, 2 bolts fit but the 3rd one doesnt. Hopefully the 2.0's cat bolts to the downpipe, else ill need a downpipe as well.
Stay tuned

Yeah i was in a hurry today when i went to the shop, forgot to bring my camera
You guys will get plenty of pics once its done

Re: Aveo 2.0L ... Engine is in, final touches remain!
u gettin excited yet? i sure would be lol, plz hurry with the pics!
-
Re: Aveo 2.0L ... Engine is in, final touches remain!
Yeah, pics, and road test report.
Demanding minds want to know,lol.
Its an awesome feeling when the hurdles are overcome.
Reminds me of way back when I bought my first car, a 1980 sunbird. Without really knowing anything I dove into a v8 swap. Talk about hurdles, but once I made it through it, it was awesome.
That was a little eaiser though since the factory had done all the homework. In your case your a true pioneer. cant wait to see the pics.
