Aveo Diesel - Error Code 89

Hello,

Is there anyone that knows the solution for the "Service Error 89" problem with the Aveo Diesel?

My car is an Aveo LTZ 5 door 95 hp diesel with six gears new from 01/2012 with now ± 35.000 km. One day at around 33.000 km i got the service code 89 error and afterwards the OBD2 lamp went on. My car is already for 3 weeks at the Chevy dealer. I phoned Chevrolet Belgium last week; they told me it is an emission problem caused by a sensitive sensor to keep the engine within the emission specs... Software problem?

There is mechanical nothing wrong with the car, it's a software problem.
Chevrolet Europe will release a software update next month.

I have an Aveo LS 1.2, the same error above 6-7 month. Are you sure that is software problem?

Yes, that is what they told me. I hope to hear from my dealer within the next few days.
It is strange that you have the same problem with an petrol engine Aveo; i thought the problem was only for the diesel engines.

I have this error above 6 months, My dealer From, Moldova, Chisinau don't know where is my trouble. Can help me? I am afraid

Hello, you must ask your dealer to take contact with Chevrolet Moldova. The solution has to come from Chevrolet Europe.
Don't worry all the new Aveo's are for the moment under warranty; so the solution has to come form the constructor.

My Dealer from Moldova don't know anything about this error. I am afraid that this can be some mechanical trouble. One guy from Russia said that he had the same error, trouble was in radiator cooler that wasn't connected. I will try this tomorrow on dealer service.

Last Friday, after having been to the dealer almost a month, we got the car back with a new engine, and today error code 89 popped right back up :-( Our dealer is clueless. Are you sure about the software update? The car is even worse now, no pull and uses too much diesel. We are so tired of this.

I will ask my dealer, because I swapt the Aveo in mid June for a brand new Chevrolet Cruze SW LTZ diesel.
The dealer would do the reprogramming afer the take-over; it is somthing with injectors. More details later.

Steven, did your dealer offer you the Cruze, or was it your own decision?

Now, it was my own decision and i can tell you the Cruze compared to the Aveo it is a completely different car.
130 hp for the Cruze to 95 hp for the Aveo and the fuel consumption is the same around 5,2 l / 100 km.

I have my Avea since 2012/1 and also have a problem with code 89. I've been at my garage for the second time. They upgraded the software the first time and the second time they've repleaced some air thing. Don't ask me what it was exectly, but they thought it was over. Yesterday the error was back, so monday I'll call them again, but when I read al the stories, I don't think they can solve it.

I have had my Aveo since November 2012, and after about 6 months this problem started. It's at the dealer right now, for the 7th or 8th time, because this problem keeps occurring. They even changed the whole engine last time, resulting that it worked fine for two weeks, but then it showed up again. I think it is starting to get expensive for Chevrolet, to keep repairing it.

I just' ve got this failure code 89. Wonder if a dealer around Gothenburg can help me fix that problem. Seems like it is a common and well known failure. My car is around 40.000 km and taken in July 2012.

My Car is an Aveo, Year 2012, Diesel 1.3D-95pk, around 40000km

It seems that the problem most of the time

occurs

with colder weather.
It feels like the car is starting not stable, like some power (electrical, bougies ?) is missing.
The error code disappears sometimes while driving and some time later (

could be after 100km)

it comes back. It feels like it's losing power that moment, but a little time later the power is back again. (The car isn't pulling that moment)
Sometimes the code comes up with starting the car.

Please help....

Yeah, same here without the power loss part. Nothing changes regarding the car and how it responds. Only that code89 coming and going from time to time. I checked videos from latin america/spain saying that it is defective thermostat, but I don't know if that's the case.

After a lot of reading / searching on the internet, I found a possible solution.
Maybe this can be confirmed by other people, who had the same problems.

I saw on a forum the following explanation:

Code 89 error. This message afflict several 1.3 diesel engines, mostly 95 hp engines. Consequences are not serious, the error message seems to be connected with a lamda probe issue. replaced it and problem will be fixed

It's the sensor, which will measure oxygen level

Update, Till now I haven't had any problems again, so I still think in my case that it is weather related, like I've mentioned before. This week will be cold again here, so I will check next week if there are problems again. I will update again.

I have ordered a lambda. I let you know if it work on my car, when I have chanced it.

For information, it doesn't work to chance suction pressure sensor (if the name is that in English). My dealer thought it was that, but the error code appeared again after just two week or something like that.

As previously described, error code 89 showed up more frequently when it's cold outside. When the code appears, often during acceleration, the car looses power for a couple of seconds. And now the car even have higher fuel consumption than normal.

(Sorry for bad English, to lazy to use google translate right now.:))

Yeah, since the weather got better I didn't get to see code89 as well, only before ignition but it turns off afterwards. Also, it comes up when the start-stop is activated (my start-stop usually never works, the few times it does though code89 comes when I stop the car and it is in start-stop mode only to go away afterwards). What is your average consumption guys? Mine is at 5.3 (what the car says).

An update from this site again...very frustrating code89
It came back 3 days ago....spontaneously while driving on the highway ??
The day after, the car wasn't used and yesterday morning by turning on the ignition, the code was still there.
I made a tour to my work, about 120 km, and after work when turning on ignition again, the code was still there.
This morning, when turning ignition on, the code was gone.
Very strange issue.
This time with the code on, I haven't noticed any problems with the car. No power loose or something.
The only thing I noticed, when I started my car yesterday morning, it didn't start the first time. The second time without a problem.
Also by cold weather, after starting the car, it feels like it takes a little while to run stable.
Like a spark plug is a sort of malfunctioning ?

My car average consumption is around 5.5

I have now chanced the lambda. Then erased the code. And after 200 meter it occurs again. But it was when I accelerate on fourth gear at 3000 rpm, just before I shift to the fifth speed. Maybe to hard for the car. I erased the code again and drive not that hard, about 400 km whiteout an error message.
I have to drive more before I really know if or how it works.

I have also think about if a spark plug could case the problem. But I haven´t chanced some.
But earlier in this thread someone got the hole engine chanced and error 89 still occur! So maybe not...

Good question about the fuel consumption. It´s around 4,6 lit/100 km in my car.
It was around 5,5-5,8 the days before I chanced the lambda but now 4,6 again.
So little lower than yours. I don´t know what it means...

Last 5 days the error came back 3 times and all in the same situation.
Driving on the highway, normal speed around 120 / 130km.
When the error pops up, I felt some kind of power loss. I tried to drive harder, pulled down the gas, but the car had no traction.
This all happened less than a minute and the traction and power was back again.
Maybe, like I said before, malfunction of a sparkplug or something
When I erased the code everything was fine again, till the next pop up...

What kind of driving are you doing for that kind of consumption? Mine lowered to 5.2 now on a mixed usage (more highway though). Also code 89 only occurs once before ignition and that's it. I believe it has to do with the weather. How much did it cost you for the lambda probe? Thanks guys for keep informing!

My kind of driving is most of the time highway, driving around 4000km a month, max 130 - 150 km/h

Another thing I noticed is to fuel diesel....not always it is possible to fuel totally full. Maybe it's the pressure/speed?
A-category like Shell is for my car better. More km I can drive with. So the consumption is not stable, cause it depends on how much fuel and what kind of fuel.

The lambda cost around 100 euro and took 5 min to chance. Very easy!
I buy from a Swedish site, so I don't think it help you if a link it:) (Of course you can by it from a Chevrolet-dealer I guess.)

I have think about the EGR-valve, if that could cause the problem? If I have time I will try to clean it.

About the consumption, I drive on different roads from 70 to 120 km/h.

As you describe, frenzke68, some kind of power loss, when the code occurs, and no traction for me to.

I've just got my car back and I hope the problem is solved.
The error 89 code is an overall code and not a specific one.
Reading the computer said that an other code was present, what has something to do with air flow measurement. A sensor was dirty and cleaned and the motor management light was off again :)
So cause of this, I went searching at Google and found an interesting story....This one is in dutch, but maybe with translate it is something interesting to read.
It's about the MAF sensor, what problably the issue is with my car.

Edit:
I disconnect the MAF sensor, and (of course) I got the engine fault symbol head up.
I cleaned the sensor and connect it again. The engine fault symbol was gone, but I still have the error code 89.

Do you know how they cleaned your sensor, frenzke68?

Some of you said this code might be appearing in low temperatures due to a sensor problem.

I have a diesel 95hp T300 too and this code poped out during last winter (I live in a warm coast area in Spain). At that time my car would sleep in the street so temperature could get lower than 5º during the night which might be cold enough.

Also, I noted down this code appeared while I was having a trip in a very cold zone of inland Spain during that winter.

Could be. Here in Sweden it´s always lower than 5 degrease, so maybe that is why my car always show error code 89;)

I haven´t take this problem any further. As long as the car is working I´m fine whit that.

I have an aveo t300 diesel.
This summer in Athens Greece. It is very hot i have the some code.... 89.
I search it and the result iare
1.egr
2.maf sensor
3.air leak between intake valve.
I spoke to garage and they tell me that is an air pipe between turbine and intake valve(throttle body)
I don't think it is something of that, I will try to clean the maf sensor...
Did anyone know how to clean this.?
I know that it is very sensitive and easy to break....!

Hi, my Aveo is 2012 T300 1,2 gasoline . I posted here because I have same error 89 .It’s not make warm inside the car, and after several minutes 89 error pops.I stopped immediately, waiting several minutes started again and open the engine cover, the cooling fan it going at maximum. I’ve changed thermostat last Friday as I’ve seen on YouTube but the error appears again and after seconds the red sign indicates water overheating!! I’m afraid is cylinder head gasket pinched. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks

Water pump was making problems. First I change thermostat as it advices very often on media but same 89 code appears. Bleeding the cooling system was secondary trying. And finally water pump. Now I have a thermostat as a spare parts. [emoji4].

Here again:) But now hopefully with some helpful information.

My Aveo (diesel) began to be more and more difficult to start. Cold outside. I read that the problem could be the glow plug. I measured them and saw that three was broken. They should show about 0,5-1,7 ohm when they are OK. My was 0,7 (ok), 170 (bad), 1900 (nightmare), 43 (also bad) ohm I changed all four glow plug, and emidiatly the error code 89 dissapeared! I did that yesterday so maybe it's to early to say to much. But I hope!:)

I still think a lot of things can trigger the error code 89, but for me it was maybe the glow plugs.

Hopefully it help someone else to!
