It would seem that you do have some compatible transmissions, but it's debatable if you'd see any increase in reliability. It's the same pool, all the children (of GM) swim (and probably pee) in it. It's very unlikely you'd find something that'd bolt up without requiring days and days of labor.

If your transmission just up and "popped", is it at all possible that you were simply abusing it well beyond what it was designed to do?
