I haven't tuned with helteck yet seeing that i'm currently unemployed, though i have seen some of there products being used at the local drag strip

Don't remember at this point if i asked this, but what year car are you working with, and are you in an emissions free county?
What sort of setups are the guys at your strip running?
It's a 2011. And no, we have no emissions here. Noone would pass inspection if we did haha.
Dan why do you say only those 2 models will work with the aveo ecu? What's the criteria for what ones will and won't work? I kind of just thought a piggy back was a piggy back really. Something that manipulats the input signals from the sensors and changes the output signals for fuel delivery and ignition timing, right?
I think you should either go full Standalone or try chipping to or try buying an ecu from a vxr 1.6t.
piggyback is just a compromise. you compromise your engine to pass emissions. If you dont need emissions, go full stand alone or run a "proper solution" for the same amount of money.
IMHO, a few solutions that i have considered for myself.
1. being the vxr computer, which would practically be plug and play. The things i think you would need would to be completely safe and reliable would be matching the cylinder conditions (compression ratio). and the fuel injector specs, as well as the MAF. I think with those 3 things you could run pretty efficiently, using the factory harness, maintaining the emissions, and obd2 port etc.
2. Full stand alone (i can't go this route because i have pa emissions). But but total control for the price of a compromised system. You can tune any engine with it. Drawback is you will probably have to change sensors. (many use a map instead of a maf, different o2, etc). But once the system is installed you can go to any tuner with experience with those ecus, the type of car no longer matters.
3. use a different cars tune-able system. based on the current set up, I was thinking of swapping in a 1.8t vw harness (i was going to use their turbo etc as well) and all the sensors. (the draw back is sensor compatibility, particularly making the crank signal match up). But once installed there are a lot of companies that can write you a file based on your specs. You can run the ecu to the obd port, and you will have some extra work there, but 1.8t swaps have been put into enough older cars that it would not be hard to modify the harness for use.
I was checking out those vxrs. They are pretty sweet that may definitely be a viable option. I suppose full standalone would be a good option also but I honestly haven't even given that idea first though because I'm affraid if the nightmare that it may create. Maybe i just don't really know what all a standalone ecu consists of or would require. Have you come across any full car wiring schematics for the aveo? At this point i'm not really interested i an ecu swap although I'm sure that's not a bad way to go.
i have schematics for the pre ecotec cars.
How do the standalone systems work?
I suppose that was a dumb way to ask that question. With the standalone setup you completely remove your stock ecu right? So does it still give you the ability to run what ever options you have. I mean is there still provision to hook up all the other car electronics?
I took your advice and emailed Eric. He recommended the sport 1000 also. I've emailed him back with some more questions so we'll see what happens but i'm still waiting on an email back from greddy haha. I spose i won't hope to see one soon. I've also looked at a nice unit that AEM makes called the EMS-4. From what i've read its relatively new but people seem to like it. I guess really i'm not sure what system i'm going to go with yet but i'm leaning much more to the standalone setup now than i was a month ago.
Apart from the tuning i'm still plumbing things together. I'm waiting on an M10x1.0 to 1/8 npt adapter for my oil line yet and the car will be drivable again at least. We have the first central pa SCCA autocross event coming up here in april so i'd really like to have it ready for that. (crosses fingers)
