i have used sds em-5, and megasquirt.

dollar for dollar, you dont need to waste money on a "name brand" unit as its all about the tuner putting it in more that the ecu.

a $10k standalone could be crap, just like a $400 one will run awesome based on the tune.

I read a bunch on the megasquirts site cuz I was initially going to try and go that route when I saw that that's how nemasys tuned. I don't remember the exact model but they recommend using an ignition system out of a Ford setup I believe. Is that something that is really necessary? I really thought it should be able to send a "now" signal to any coil pack so what is different about that particular ignition system?

I completely agree with the idea of the non name brand controller being adequate, I just wanted to make sure I'm not "cheaping out" on basically the most important part of the build. I wanted to learn a lot throughout this project and one of the things I wanted to learn is how to do it right, which is why I keep asking on here so much

Good luck on getting anything from greddy haha. As far as the AEM EMS-4 or the SPORT 1000 it'll come down to there reliability and how much there willing to assist you when you need help and price does play a factor.

Eric has been very helpful. He said $1500 for the controller, harness, software, quickstart guide, and stickers lol. Thats the upper end of my price range and while I'm not discounting it, I'm gonna keep shopping.

iirc the ford coil packs are "individualized" meaning wiring up the coil pack "now" signals is up to you. Some coil packs have "controllers" inside of them. I believe most fi aftermarket coil packs are of fords design. so using the ford coil packs is just a cheaper/oem quality alternative to buying ms or similar for 2-3x the cost.

megasquirt is a user oriented system, not just a cheap unit.

If you consider what you're getting $1500.00 isn't that bad when others like AEM don't really offer package deals.

I agree 1500 isn't bad. I suppose I really just need to pic something and go with it. Rabbit, I know its like "free" software for the megasquirt but what's the software like? Am I going to need to swap out my ignition system do you think?

I always feel dumb when I ask questions like this but does anyone know if the 2011 ecotec is direct injection? I kinda think it is especially with the injectors having the extended tips. I had some people tell me though that its manifold injection so thats why i'm asking... I thought it would be easier to ask first before digging stuff apart to look.

      it is not direct injection.

the software with any ecu, greddy, megasquirt or otherwise is only as good as the tuner. Unless you tune it yourself, then you need a comparable base map to start with.

I dont think there is a stand alone that will work "directly" with the aveo coil pack. But i think ve with megasquirt you can wire it to "control" the factory coil, but im not sure why you would want too.

I think you also need to consider timing pick up compatibility. As well as a few other sensors. You will basically be rewiring the engine to do it right, no matter what the system.
