Castrol magnatec.....anyone using it ???

:confused: Just thought I would ask this and see if anyone is using it, and how it is working out for you. I always use full synthetic oil, I barely drive, at 31K in 9 years, but I change the oil/filter a lot. I get so many opinions on whether I should do it by time or miles. So I gave up, and just do it when I feel like it, usually 4-6 months, or 400-900 miles! But this Magnatec sounds interesting, and it says that all the 'wear' in the engine happens in the first 20 mins. of driving. if this is true, then I NEED to swap over to this new oil.

I barely drive 10-30 mins. when I go out driving. SO if that is true, about the wear happening in the first 20 mins. I SHOULD use this to protect my engine. I thought I was protecting it all this time with the synthetic oil. Anyway, is anyone using it and whats your opinion of it. Its on sale right now big time! Great price, I could swap over for less than a CHEAP conventional oil change! So....is it worth it, or is it just hype? Thanks.

Sounds like marketing speak to me. I use synthetic and change it every 4-5K miles.

Well I just changed over to Magnatec tonight. It was only $21 for the 1.25 gallon jug at Wal-Mart, (cheaper than conventional Dino oil!) Not even on sale! The only issue I have, that maybe others can tell me if I screwed myself on or not. The 5W-30 that my owners manual says to use is only available in 'semi-synthetic' in the Magnatec. So I had to go to 5W-20 to get full synthetic. Thats what I always use. Full synthetic.
Why Castrol makes it this way, I have no idea. But am I going to screw up my engine with this lighter oil? I've never had a drop of oil leak or burn, ever. Hell, never had that problem in ANY car or truck I have ever owned in my life. Including my Aveo, it has never leaked or burned oil. Am I setting myself up for leaks or something worse with this 5W-20?

It says on the jug, it passes all the 'GM Dexros' tests? Meaning it is made to use in GM cars/trucks. But it is not 5W-30. Is this lighter oil going to cause me trouble, or is it not a big deal. I only had about 1,400 miles on the oil I took out, but it had been 6 months, and it is HOT here, so I wanted to change it out for the summer, and I wanted to try this 'new oil',....cant beat the price, never had a problem with any Castrol oils, now have a Bosch filter in it, and this Magnatec.

IF this 'hype' is real, it didnt cost me extra, hell it was cheaper than their regular full synthetic oils! If it isnt hype, then my engine is better protected, since I drive so little, and when I do it is short trips around town, so if the engine 'wear' does happen at start up and first 20 mins. of driving, I am now 'protected'. It already sounds a bit quieter, going to find out tomorrow when i go driving around town running errands. BUT...is this to light an oil or no? I know not to ever go heavier, like 20W 50...but will this 5W-20 weight be TO light?

**** Well I JUST got of the phone with Castrol, and they are telling me that I MUST replace the new 5W-20 NOW, with a 5W-30, or I will damage my engine by not protecting 'vital engine parts' it is to thin. I got some techno-bable about why they dont make 5W-30 in full synthetic, and that this product replaces one of their 'Edge Full Synthetic' oil types. And that I get 'full engine protection at start-up with any of their full synthetics'. So why are they hyping this to protect the engine at start-up and during the first 20 mins,. of driving?? I couldnt get a straight answer. It was SO much techno-babble I didnt understand it. so it is back to Wal-Mart for another $21 jug of full synthetic 5W-30. A bargin gone bust!!!

Well that's a bummer. Far as I know 5-20 might yield a few extra MPG, with a little extra lifter noise on startup, however I would not want to use it in high temps as it would be pretty thin in 100+ temps. That is a good winter viscosity in really cold climates. Lesson learned!

just go with a regular synthetic oil, I run mobil 1 in my truck and g8, and castrol half blend in my aveo.
