      Coolant smell inside

At just over 5000 miles I am beginning to smell coolant inside the vehicle especially if the heat is on. Also, the windshield is constantly foggy. It's not experiencing any coolant loss so I suspect it is a very small leak at the heater core. I'm going to take it to the dealer later this week.

Probably the heater core. I'd drop it off at the dealership service department too, warrenty is a wonderful thing.

I had a coolant leak on my '07 within the first 3000 km. I was told from the dealership it was an o-ring leaking at the head for the heater by-pass hose.

my car had a burnt plastic smell (almost like burning coolant) when i got in it for the test drive with 3 miles on the odometer.

it really has gone away yet. but i can't find the source. i look over it every once in a while looking for any signs of any type of leak and can't pinpoint where the problem is. Anyone else have this issue. without AC does our heater box still have a drain?

      Re: Coolant smell inside

Two days before I took it in just about every ounce of coolant seeped into the vehicle on both the drivers and the passengers side. Service advisor confirms that it was the heater core and it is going to take four days to fix because they dont stock the part (in fact he said it has been four years since he's seen a heater core go on any new model). He also said they will do their best to extract all of the coolant from the carpeting and shampoo it. He hinted that if there is a permanent smell of coolant that I can probably get GM to buy it back and issue a 2009 model at no additional cost.

+1 I had my gearbox gland seal changed by the dealer because it started leaking a week after I bought my aveo.

      Re: Coolant smell inside

Man, it sucks when a heater core leaks. I had that happen on one of my previous cars and the carpet was ruined from all the awful green goo seeping in, and the blower would cause a mist of coolant to come out of my air vents and defrost ducts, coating the insides and the windshield with the stuff. I had to dissasemble the entire dash, including the steering wheel and airbag to get out the leaky core and replace it, as well as clean the airways for the vents. I think the copper tubes used in the core are prone to developing cracks from expansion and contraction.

My brand new A/C compressor was also defective and had to be replaced. Most cars have stuff break when they get old, but Aveo problems all happen during the warranty period. Hopefully they don't re-occur...

      Re: Coolant smell inside

I finally got it back yesterday afternoon. They said it was a bitch of a job replacing the core. They used an extractor to get all the coolant out of the carpet and then detailed the hell out of it. The car is cleaner now than it was when I took delivery of it with 4 miles on it. Thank god for the warranty...it would have been 15 hours of labor.
