      DIY Supercharger/CAI mods

I'll bet you're thinking "Yeah, right..." I myself have seen those turbines that sit in the intake pipe on ebay, and read the terrible reviews: Worse gas mileage, and NO noticable power gain-more often, a loss. I have also seen those setups where the end of the cone filter is hooked up to ducting and a scoop of some sort, and ppl who do that says it adds some extra power at higher speeds... so, I mixed the two ideas, and got GOOD results!

I have some pictures, but the uploader isn't working for me right now... (I've tried basic uploader, images, attachments-can't upload ANYTHING) I'll try to post some later on!

So, I started with a Chrome Intakes CAI... I drilled/cut the holes in the front black honeycomb that goes into the wheelwell where the filter lies (Somebody on here did that and called it a GOAT (grabber of air thingy) intake...
I then added a 45* elbow to the intake, leading it almost to where the holes are (I have a AEM water bypass valve, so I don't worry aboot sucking water.

After the holes, before the elbow, I tried a fan by the holes, blowing AT the intake (no good) Everybody kept saying I needed to increase the air pressure to create boost... but I said, "Well if you can increase the airflow, even without the pressure, that'd increase power too, right?" "Yep"

So after the elbow, I tried the fan idea again... just a 5" fan, a 5" plastic bowl with a 3" bottom (cut out) some aluminum foil, and electric tape (2 D batteries) I super-glued the fan to the bowl, so all the fans air was forced into the 3" bottom that was cut out. That led into a VERY short duct made of foil & electric tape, that blows right into the filter. With the car off, and the fan on, air blows fairly heavily out the sides of the filter. I hooked it up last night, and drove just a lil' bit; I noticed more torque right off... when the fan is off... faster, better starts than ever. My wheels would spin with the amount of gas I usally applied at takeoff. I read about intakes, and how a smaller pipe makes for more power at low rpms, (less at higher) and the minor constriction in the end seems to accomplish this same thing. So with it hooked up, and the power off, my 0-60mph time was .26 seconds faster than my previous best time. I flipped it on, took a test in the same place I always do, and pulled a whopping .54 seconds better than the OLD-best time. Not .54 faster than the previous run. Starts are not as fast with it on, but acceleration is improved overall...

I am VERY pleased with this, for numerous reasons... for one, it was only about $10 to put together. Two, it increased my 0-60mph time by roughly a quarter second off, half second on. So there's no loss when it's off, quite the opposite! Third, it was entirely my own idea (concepts borrowed from other rigs, as mentioned) and while other ppl may have done similar stuff, I haven't seen it. And considering I didn't know JACK about cars last January, I feel like I've come quite a ways, in little time. I plan to get an even better fan, use the proper attachment for the intake tip, and wire it somehow, so it won't use batteries. (maybe wire it LIKE those others on the market, so it only comes on at full throttle... that'd be sweet, get the benefit of better starts, AND the better higher rpm acceleration!!! Any questions, I'll be happy to answer! Maybe not right away, but... Ya'll have a great day!!!

      P.S.-I call it the "Mini-Charger"

Yeah! Where I used electric tape, you can buy a universal adapter for this type of application (I think fits all cone style filters) at Autozone; just a lil connector-it's a Spectre part # 8147 & I plan to get one to do it "right"... Just wanted to test it b4 I invested! (like another $7) all this is temporary... Just playin' around b4 adding turbo, probably next summer!
