Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
I'll preface this with saying I've researched engine dropping on this forum.
Anywho, as the genius I am, my timing slipped in my 04 hatchback while I was driving the 2...maybe 3 miles to the shop that was going to change my belt...Just got this guy three weeks ago :p
Point is, my dad and I are looking to divert away from a valve job and just drop in something with a little more power and I found word of a few different engines that slip in but wanted to cover all our bases if possible.
this very enlightening list is what we found
•87-93 Pontiac Lemans 2.0 SOHC
•87-94 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0 SOHC (turbo and non-turbo)
•87-9? Chevy Cavalier 2.0 SOHC
•80-CURRENT Vauxhall Astra 1.6,1.8 and 2.0 SOHC and DOHC (turbo and non-turbo)
•80-CURRENT Opel Kadett/Astra 1.6,1.8 and 2.0 SOHC and DOHC (turbo and non-turbo)
•Actually nearly every Opel or Vauxhall will bolt up including the V6 DOHC motors
•08 Saturn Astra 1.8VVT DOHC
•98-03 Daewoo Leganza 2.2 DOHC
•98-03 Daewoo Nubira 2.0 DOHC
•04-08 Suzuki Forenza 2.0 DOHC
•04-08 Suzuki Reno 2.0 DOHC
•98 Isuzu Rodeo & Amigo 2.2 DOHC
Although Pops builds hot rods, he would like to say "hats off" to you all in the little car world and we would like to know if we can just run off this list or if we're missing any you might think a good option.
Also, if to your knowledge any of these are not in fact "slip ins"?
Thanks a zillion,
Anoura

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
By far the easiest swap is the 2.0 from the Forenza.
It will drop right using your stock motor mounts and your 1.6's manual transmission.
You need the 2.0 ECU but you can use your original harness, if you do that you need to work on it which is mainly lenghtening some wires for a few sensors.
You do need a turn key engine tho, meaning all the serpentine belt accesories (alternator, power steering pump, a/c compressor, tensionner) and the brackets needed to hold everything in place, you need the 2.0's flywheel but you can keep your 1.6's clutch and pressure plate. The COMPLETE engine ready to run, NONE of the 1.6's accessories fit on the Forenza's 2.0 engine.
Depending on where you can get the engine and parts for it, especially if you pick up a salvaged engine, which 90% are not complete, you need to pick up the rest of the parts from the dealer as most scrap yards dont carry what you will need. Be ready to spend up to 2000 dollars for the engine and all the parts needed.
In my opinion its not worth it for the power increase, getting a salvaged 1.6 to replace yours is MUCH MUCH easier and if you simply slap a set of headers with a custom 2 inch exhaust and a nice air intake, you will have more power then a stock 2.0 and its going to cost way less.

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
If you could get a hold of a Vauxhall Corsa VXR 1.6 turbo engine and the six speed manual transmission. That would give you great package, but you’re looking at something you’d have to ship in from England. There is a ton of performance add-ons for that engine.
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
You will also need the complete wiring harness, all the sensors and the ecu for that engine. And like Lars said, importing that could be quite a costly process.
Your gauges might not work properly if not at all with such a swap too, so your looking at custom gauges probably.
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
get another 1.6 and turbo it
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
It's decided, we're going to keep the 1.6 seeing as 6 places said the one bent valve from the slip will be estimated 1400-1700 but my dads resident hot rodder machinist said he'll do it tomorrow if he can for 650.
That's including a full 60,000 service and he really goes above and beyond.
At any rate, we still think we should turbo it for now,
we're thinking of making this little Aveo one of his guys' project cars down the road. Ha.. which means he'll want to go Diesel if at all possible.
If it's not physically impossible, and I can pitch it to these old guys where it will sound fun, I betcha a pretty penny it will get done.
They're all pre-'49 runners but they've got enough time on their hands and a wealth of knowledge and resources. Only issue is, their knowledge is from a different era.

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
hey im planin for a engine swap as well just read your post that the astra vxr to current model wil go in 2 the aveo.. im from the uk so mines a kalos dont know if thats any difference in regards to engine mounts i dont think there is.
buttt my question is that will the vxr's current engine Z20LEH fit straight in.. or would i need fabricated engine mounts..
also a bit of an issue i have is my gearbox has gone! so i need to replace it.. but for the time being im not plain engine swap til mayb next summer..
however my tranny is costing me £1000+vat
soo thought id try cheat the system.. would the gear box FOR the Z20LEH work with the kalos 1.4 2004 DOHC engine.. so that way im ready for the swap at least in some way.. rather than having to fork out for 2 gear boxes??
all help will be appreciated..
many thanks

I've seen on the UK ebay sight VXR engines for sale and you want the 6 speed to go with it.

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
isnt that the 2.8 version.. as its a z28 :\
will the aveo even be in 1 piece if i put my foot down LOL!
i was hesitating the 2ltr swap if it could handle that... let alone a 2.8.. BUUTT i wouldnt be complaining.. nice find btw..
im not looking to do the swap just yet.. bit short on funds at the mo. so im going to wait till maybe xmas time when i should have saved up enough money and go all out in the engine.. for now its all exterior and interior.. :(
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
I see them all the time on ebay, I think I came across three today. One was a 1.6 VXR, witch I'd like to get.
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
i cant waiiiit till the day...

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
OOOHH MYYY SWEEEETTT LOOORRDDDDD HAAVVVEE MEERRCCYYYYY!!!!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/07-VAUXHALL-VECTR ... _500wt_896
vecta v6 vxr enginee!!!
gearbox everything!!!
III WWAANNTTT :(
FLIPIN BEING BROKE SUCKS! lol
this is dirt cheap omd!!
btw does anyonw know if that would even fit in the kalos.. i only have a 1.4 auto.. and obv ima do the manul conversion...
omd i get butterflyz evrytime i read that...
V6 2.8 LTR TURBO VXR ENGINE!! OO MMYYY
HHUUHH!!
I JUS READ ON PARKERS.!! the 0-60 is only like 6.5!!
THATS CRAP!!! 2.8 ltr TURBO v6 only giving that!! what the hell!!!
i was xpecting something more like 5 maybe 5.5
thats put me off now..!
but then again the vectra isss a tad bit bigger and heavier
kalos 1035 kg (and mine will be lighter after removing a few things..)
vectra 1561 kg
still alot faster than a 14 second 0-60 but.. loll i want something around the 5 second mark :(
maybe with the weight diff it may come to around 6 maybe less.. who knows..
main question tho.. will that v6 lump fit in my engine bay!! :\
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
Like you said, your car is a lot lighter... and with a little bit of tuning I think you'd be easily able to do 0-60 in 5... And the 6-speed gearbox sounds good too. Every time I'm on a freeway I wish I could shift it one more time to bring the RPM down... 8)

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
just do a cobalt ss swap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
i dont have access to cobalts here in england... like you guys have issues with vauxhall engine swaps i have the issue with the cobalt swap lol.. :(
id prefer the vauxhall vxr swap personally to be honest.. and plus i think theres more parts if im not mistaken for the vxr's as theres soooo many young lads buying them tuning them up..
but ye.. does anyone know if the V6 from the vxr would fit the kalos engine bay??
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
SOD IT!!
from next week im stripping my engine down!
that way i can sell parts of the engine and also get it out my engine bay and have it ready for the vxr engine when i get it! mwahaha mwahahah!!
umm where do i start LOOL!!!
im not to experienced in this field..
so um would it be better to sell my engine part by part?
or as the entire lump?
please help... :(
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
there is a thread about this, one of the v6 engines will "work" but i am not sure which.
the one you posted looks longitudinally mounted? maybe its just my iphone picture size?
some options you have thats hard in the us:
1.6l NA engine with 241hp : http://www.aveonetwork.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=231
info on v6 swaps: http://www.aveonetwork.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=407
for your reading enjoyment.. percisionboost runs daewootech.com..

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
umm not really. ive just sprayed things to make them look nicer and changed the piping...
ive got a this air thing.. i forgot what its called.. LOOLL i sound like a div now ahaha!
it suposidly forces more air in the car.. i have an auto and it smoothed out my shifts and made it smoother on the way up to the redline.. worked well in my opinion.. then i brought one of those fan supercharger things for like £195 dont ask.. i didnt read up first...
i thought id have the dump valve working.. guess not!!
thats it really...
and the thunder cats battery cover..
but im keeping that
i lvoe it. its too cool.. gona have a red led glow behind it when i do the vxr swap! :D
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
The V6 3.0 we supposedly can swap in is from Cadillac Catera (Opel Omega in Europe). It should be the same motor mounts...
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
your very resourcefull loll.. your like a aveo wikipedia loooll
you know everything :|
btw i mean that in a really nice complemantary way.. :D
thanks forr the info btw.. :D
never thought a v6 could even fit in there :S seems so tinny and crammpped!!
MMM IMAGINE A V10 IN THERE!!! loll now id be asking to die tho.. lol
hmmm, just had a read about that v6 in the omega... loll id rather have the 4 cylinder astra vxr.. its more mpg has more tourq not by much but stil, and the 0-60 comparin the omega and astra... astra wins even though there is a 400kg weight diff... lool which is a LOOTT!!
but would that actually knock off 2 seconds on a 0-60 time.. hmm actually i think it would..
but then the issue of after market parts appears... :( il be back on the same boat as the kalos.. no engine parts...
and the omega has a 5 speed gearbox anyway.. eww! loll could bolt up another tranny tho i guess..
dont seem to be that many omega engines around... hmpf..!

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
If anyone would be called an Aveo encyclopedia (or an automotive guru for that matter) - it should be petrified.rabbit. I've learned quite a few things from him in the last few months I was on this forum.
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
I'd forget the V6 Vectra or Omega engines. Even VXR engines are still pricey.
Go scan the scrapyards for a smashed up Astra SRI or Astra GSI. Other possibilities in the UK are the Astra MK5 2.0 tubo, Insignia 1.6 turbo (same as Corsa VXR) or go for something a bit older and find a Corsa C 1.8 SRI and when you have more money take it to Courtney and get it turbo'd. Another option is the old Cavalier/Calibra turbo.
I'm in the same boat as you but I have checked my Aveo against a friends Corsa D and the mounts are the same. Vauxhall has plenty options.

ive seen loads of vxr engines with gearbox looms and ecu all for around 3k...
id see that as reasonable... my issue is reliability so i dont want to buy an old engine with high millage. i would feel comfy id end up taking it somewere and getting it refurbished.. anything with more than 20k on the clock im not even bothering with.
i want as much punch as i can possibly get... so from what ive found the vectra being one of the heaviest has the 2.8 v6 which gives it a 0-60 in 6.5 in a car thats almost 1 and a half times the wieght of my car stock. and im doing alot of weight shedding as well..
so from what little knowledg i have i assume that would be an ideal swap and with about another few hundred on bolt ons get it near enough the 0-60 5 second mark if its not already there usull stuf, cranks, pulleys cams light weight flywheel ignition packs obv ect ect....
plus im planning to have it twin turboed. small and a large 1, 1 for low and 1 for higher end revs 2 reduce the turbo lag and get decent dump valves adjusted properly to reduce the turbo spool time as well so it doesnt have to start spooling from a stand still all the way bak up.. and as an exampl spool from say 3all the way up instead of starting from 0 giving it a head start.
if theres anything better engine wise guys please let me know :D pref easy swaps as im planning to do it myself and wil be first ever swap...

Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
Those are some big plans you got there... I'm with you on newer engine if you're gonna do a swap anyways... it's either pay more now, or pay more later trying to fix the old one... but everyone has their own opinion. I'm not sure about twin-turboing it that way... The only twin-turbos I've seen were the same size... Then again, my turbo experience is very limited altogether (except for cooling turbines that are used for air conditioning on military jets, I've installed and removed plenty of those  )

loll.. there not thaaat big of plans LOLL... some of my mates go nutts on their cars.. but then again their cars are woow :( r34's supras' 200sx's crx's ect ect i envy them..
by the way that turbo set up is actually kinda common... from what i knw.. i fink its refferd 2 as a sequential turbo set up.. frm what i remember the twin turbo supra uses same set up.. were 1 turbo is used for lower rpm then other turbo only activates when higher rpm range is hit and other turbo may or may not shut off depending on set up... looooads of racers i knw use tht set up. n then some fine tune their dump valvs as well to help with the spooling time ect ect...
some ppl even use similar size turbos for those set ups and then have 1 active and the over ready spooling to hit off once a set rpm or speed is reached..
-
Re: Engine drop- enlisting knowledge
Like I said I don't know much about turboing cars, but that sounds like a logical explanation. But in my case I'd probably go with cobalt swap if my current engine died on me and I had money for it 8) more support since it's domestic for us.
