What causes the engine to idle high when you first start a cold engine and will it hurt the engine if you drive before the engine revolutions drop to normal idle speed?

modern cars don't need to be warmed up. It's normal for it to idle high just after a cold start.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far the wall moves after you hit it.
it wont hurt if you start and go, i sometimes do it when im late for work.
but of course it is best to wait for things to warm up before hand, but not a must with modern cars
Revs higher to warm up the cats. Keep the revs moderate for those first few minutes and you're fine.Originally Posted by michael word

I've always been told it's like an automatic choke when the motor first starts. Helps to heat everything up to operating temp I guess.
On a cold engine starting the pcm adds more fuel to help keep the car stable since there isn't much heat in the cylinders and to help emissions.. the faster the car heats up the quicker emissions drop and the car gets to open loop quicker.
