generic bosch, you mean universal o2 sensor? I thought every o2 sensor is different depending on some cars I guess. How do I know which one will work?

in my line of work, i have had very limited success with replacing an o2 sensor with a bosch, love their spark plugs... dont get me wrong... but they usually require a longer amount of time to get aquainted with the ecm, and thus turning the check engine light on with the same code, across all manufacturers, i've only had good look with stuff from the vehicles particular dealer... (not that i'm happy to admit it, i cant stand buying anything other than a whole car from dealers...) as far as the fuel system cleaner goes, i very much doubt it can cause the o2 sensor to go bad... its possible for the o2 snsr to already be faulty, and the ecm not detect it until the sensor has been cleaned properly... but thats rare, at best. bare you in mind that this is based on roughly two years of hands on experience... feel free to take it or leave it. =)
Dude, what kind of car is this?
A Chevy Aveo.
Piece of crap....
Why? because its faster than your brothers civic? or because it gets better gas mileage than your scion?
-silence-
Me too, at 56,000. The CEL went on, and like magic I got a notice from the state that I had to pass an emissions test before reregistering the car. End result: I went to the Chevy dealer and dropped $1,000 to replace both O2 sensors, the MAP sensor and all the spark plugs (apparently they were really dirty). I am inclined to think it is a flaw, but there are other possible reasons.
$1000 for that?
Yep. Sensors were $90-120 each, they charged me $9.76 EACH for the spark plugs, fuel hose, total $460 parts + $540 labor. They wanted $1600, but I started crying like a little girl (mechanics HATE that) and they dropped the price, forgoing replacing the valve cover gasket ($149), replacing the serpentine belt ($167) and cleaning the injectors ($249). I'm rounding the dollars. I can get the gasket and belt for about $50 from several different places. I think I can do it myself and save a couple of fortunes. I dumped a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner in the gas tank. I know, I got taken for a ride, but they did spend all day on it.
1600? wow, seems like a quick rich scheme to me.. anyway, I just received the sensor today (bought ngk/ntk 25189 for 120-125usd at advance auto) and after installed the new pre-cat o2 sensor, no more CEL light. I have not taken for a long distance yet myb around this weekend.
trailerguy, to tell my story, I went to a napa shop at hoboken,NJ last month I guess, and they charged me 80usd for a small job like changing gasket (7.50usd for this gasket) inside the exhaust muffler. that is why I am tryin to learn as much as possible for DIY on small problems. Well, that is why we bought aveo anyway.
btw, rabbit, should I change the o2 sensor bank2(after cat) too? I have no problem so far with that, but I found a deal for the after -cat o2 oem sensor (ntk) for less than 60 bucks.

i agree, you say the spent "all day" on it, were you sitting there waiting? did you watch the repair? I have swapped engines in a day. I know guys who can swap frames on trucks in a day, I think you probably waited for them to order parts, get parts delivered, etc. Plus they guy who was just throwing parts at it probably was not trained well enough to fix it (but he knew more than you to sell you on the idea all those parts needed replaced). I hate hearing stories like this.
Well yes, they had the car all day, almost exactly 24 hours from the time I dropped it off till I picked it up. How much time they actually spent is open to speculation. It needed their computer and diagnostics to determine the problems (five different codes). Also the state of Illinois required I have a form completed by the technician before they would rerun the emission test, so I was kind of over a barrel. But seeing what they wanted for the other stuff which I can easily do myself gives the idea of how their pricing works.
