its in more cars then just the forenza...theres the reno, optra, and lacetti

heres a link to more info on his optra but from what he is saying it sounds like the u20sed wouldnt be a good swap idea if you plan to boost because after 200ft lbs the tranny breaks....this also mean that the aveo's tranny will probably brake under less torque than that since it is rated lower than that. since its D16 (or F16 i forget which) itll probabyl only hold til 160 ft lbs

If 200ft-lbs is the max, that would mean the engine would be developping about 225-230 at the crank (12-15% loss thru the drivetrain). In metric that's 302 to 310 N-m.

Now if the assumption that the number in the model means the amount of Nm the transmission is rated for, a D20 would be rated at 200Nm. With a security factor of 1.5, that would mean the transmission is built to break at 300Nm (200*1.5=300), which would explain why the transmission always breaks at 200ft-lbs (at the wheel).

In my engineering courses, we used 1.5 to 3 usually to design things, sometimes more if it were a beam for buildings or bridges. Therefore a 1.5 security factor would make sense to me, since a transmission is not a device that will put any people at risk (compared to a bridge).

If we put this theory to the D16 transmission, that would mean 160*1.5=240Nm. 240Nm = 178ft-lbs. With a 12-15% loss, that would mean 155-160ft-lbs at the wheels would break the transmission.
I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.

wow that sucks....160ft-lbs huh? hmm....what can we do to reinforce it? i know from experience that this tranny has pretty weak mounts...ive broken one at 3k miles before
