Well since it looks like I started this thread, I just wanted to clear this up. I was not saying Fram filters are the highest quality, just that they are sufficient. I have used them before with no problems. Are there better built filters, absolutley, but I drive a lot of miles and change the oil regularly and if you follow the maintenance schedule you probably won't have problems. Rememeber here, the Aveo is one of, if not the cheapest car sold in the US. I don't see the point in using synthetic oils and 10 dollar filters on it. I am not saying they don't have a place on say a turbo engine, or in extreme temperatures, or towing, or short trips all of the time, but for a daily driver aveo, they serve the purpose.
Totally agree. I use GM Filters as a personal preference. I don't see why the Fram filter wouldn't be sufficient. In fact, I used Fram a number of times on the Wave personally, no problems. In fact, if I don't get a GM filter, I get a Fram.

The only reasons I see for using synthetic oils is the longer service interval and environmental concerns (mpg, disposal, etc...), which these days is not a terrible idea. You can reduce waste by 50% or more.

I leased Pontiac Wave from September 2006 to August 2011.

I just use full synthetic AMSOil and WIX filter (for the first AMSOil oil change) for the second one and up I'll be using the AMSOil Absolute Efficiency filter too. Thinking about switching from 5W-30 to their Signature 0W-30 Oil... Sounds like it's the best one they've got...

I'm not 100% sure about this, but i know used motor oil can be re-refined and turned into shopping bags or something.. according to the waste management guy at the shop. But synthetic cannot?

Anyone here know? really changes the environmental impact aspect if that is true.

and yes fram isnt the highest quality filter but it was designed to last 3000 miles. If your worried about environmental impact how long does a freshly oiled piece of polished metal take to break down compared to a piece of oil soak cardboard? where in you defense it starts breaking down while still in use? All, how much longer is the cardboard designed to last when compared to the paper filter element? I know greasy cardboard pizza boxes last a lot longer than the greasy paper plates.. there i conducted my own experiment.

sorry to threadcrap, but this made me chuckle.

and; my 2 cents: if you use cheaper stuff, maybe change it more frequently. me, I have had cars which I neglected severely, not changing the oil or filter for way too long. I didn't have any problems but also didn't have the car for hundreds of thousands of kilometers either. Now I am more careful and usually get my oil changes done within a 5000km interval, and I always check my oil once in a while to see what it looks like. I never let it get too nasty anymore.

People I speak with that have used synthetic with better filters seem to insist on having a better economy and performance. Others who don't use it, seem to insist it doesn't make any difference.

I will probably switch to synthetic and a good filter, and I will monitor my MPG and see what happens

The oil filter on the 2009-2010 is just a simple paper element cartridge. It costs more than the other (older) filters though, as there aren't many aftermarket alternatives available on the market yet.

i know, that is my filter as well.

but i own a lot of cars, and my VWs generally get oem filters or the car will show signs of oil pressure drop.

beaters get whats cheap at the story, i love advances $14 oil change deal for those...

I bet You did not know this But Walmart's Super tech Oil filters are made by Fram and My car and my dad's 03 Impala have the same Oil filter Number 3387 A Saves me from memorizing two different filter numbers I buy AC Delco or STP whatever I can afford. I stopped using Fram because Of the fact that the Super Tech filters are made by them.

      Re: Fram oil filter discussion

I switched to Amsoil signiture 0W-30 and the Amsoil filter and it definitly made a difference in the way the engine revs and the mpg. I have used rredline syn oil in all of my racing engines and have experienced very little bearing wear compared to reg oil. I also switched because Amsoil backs the product with a full engine replacement warranty if the engine ever fails due to lack of lubrication sans oil pump failure. Just my opinion but I have been building engines for about30 years and you can't beat syn oil for lubrication.

Thanks, Luke. Now I'm definitely switching from their 5W-30 to their Signature 0-W30 and their filter. I've only driven on 5W-30 and a WIX filter for about 3K miles, but that's been since Jan, so I might be changing my oil soon.
