Have to use reverse lifter to go in 2nd

My 09 Aveo5 LS Manual has always had to have the reverse lifter pulled to easily go into 2nd gear. My mechanic said he'd seen this before and I'm curious if anyone else have this as well.

I had clutch replaced recently. The gears were not smooth. Sometimes the gear would not go to 2nd. Sometimes when shifting to 1st gear,it would shift to reverse and vice versa. Turns out the mechanic had done poor job in shift linkage adjustment. It might be shift linkage not engaging properly in your case. Have it checked. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to adjust. Others might know in the forum. Hope this helps you.

Have it fixed. You don't want shift to wrong gear during high speed. It might fail the transmission or cause heavy damage to the engine and is more expensive that having shift linkage adjusted.

Yes, I had this happen when I removed the transmission and replaced the clutch/flywheel. The shifter cable isn't aligned. The Aveo uses a cheap 1 cable setup for lateral and longitudinal shifter movement when there should really be one cable for each.

Anyways - you need to loosen the shifter cable clamp underneath the car (it's near the firewall towards the center), remove the shifter boot inside the car, and essentially zip tie the shifter in the middle neutral position. Then go underneath the car and re-tighten the cable clamp. Afterward, make sure the trans goes into each gear perfectly before putting the boot back on inside the car. After the 4th or 5th time, I got it aligned. This will take a few hours and is a complete pain.
