Hi Wiseguydave,
After checking my resources, I found that two sources can be used to identify an engine. They are the engine casting number and the engine code. Both of these sources are required when seeking engine size and horsepower.
The casting numbers will identify the cubic inch displacement (CID), .i.e. 350 CID of the engine.
The engine code identifies the specific vehicle the engine was equipped with from the factory, the engine production code, the horsepower rating, and the compression ratio. This code can be found in one of two locations depending on engine size. Casting numbers for V-8 gasoline engines will be located in these locations, depending on make of engine. Hope this information is helpful.
