Is it just me or do all the engines seem like the idle drops way too slow after revving the engine in neutral or between gears.. is there anything you can do to make the RPM's come down faster?

That's completely subjective without additional information. If you provide some detail and numbers, I could compare mine to yours. Cold/warm/both; RPMs when revved; RPMs at idle; how many seconds does it take to get back down there?
Engine warm... idle over 1000 1500 rpm takes rpms 3 maybe 4 seconds to get under 1000 rpm... hard to shift smoothly because the engine is revved up higher than rpm should be when going into next gear.
My '05 5-sp has never done anything like that, and IMO something is not right there with your Aveo. Have you checked the functioning of the TPS? Or perhaps if the throttle body has enough gunk, then maybe the butterfly is getting hung up on it as it's trying to close. If not one of those, then a restriction in the throttle cable or gas pedal comes to mind, but I'd guess the chances of a problem like that hanging around are somewhat remote.
I have a 2005 Aveo that the idle goes way up to 2,000 rpm and at times stays there? I cleaned the throttle body and the IAC and it made it worse! I have no engine codes, but I suspect something is wrong with the IAC?
I've done the same things as jayman and I agree it has to have something to do with the IAC but I don't want to just throw parts at it.
I have a new IAC coming from Nappa today. I really hope it fixing it, becuase I can't drive it with 3,000 RPM idle!
I have a 2008 Aveo also with over 200,000 miles on it, that is sitting becuase it needs a new clutch, but that is the only thing I ever had wrong with it, becuase replacing the timing belt and water pump every 50,000 miles.
It sounds like my idle isn't as far out of control as yours... please report back on how the new IAC valve works.
The new IAC valve fixed the issue! Has not idled under 1,000 in months! The part was $105 at Nappa. I could not find anyone who has replaced it on a Aveo, so it was gamble. I disconnected the battery to reset the computer and shut the car on and off 4 times running it for 4 minutes each so the new valve would learn and that did it!
Good to hear it's solved the problem.
The only other problem is the battery just went dead over the weekend and it was over 7 years old. Just trying to keep this car going till Spring, then trading it in for a new Toyota Tacoma. I probably won't get more then $500 for it, but just want it off my hands. I paid $8,200 for this Aveo new, but the Tacoma is going to be closer to $35,000!!
I hear ya... sometimes it seems like "when it rains it pours" at least that's what it's doing with my truck... so I do have sympathy for people when they're having lots of vehicle problems.
New cars are expensive! Last year I bought my wife to the Toyota dealer and had her pick out any car she wanted, she test drove several cars and I was hoping she would of picked out a Camry which was lower priced, but she picked out a Prius V wagon instead and the price tag on that came to $31,000! My 2 Aveo's I bought new that were under $9,000 each does not come close to the price tag on the Prius!
I have been noticing the same thing with my Aveo, specifically because I bounce back and forth between driving it and my 13' Spark. The RPM's fall much too slow, causing either myself to slow down the shifts or RPM's too high for the next gear. Is it a solid bet that a new IAC would fix this? I would probably make the swap if I knew it was going to work….
The new IAC fixed mine, have not had any issues since I replaced it.
This is mine! You ever seen a Aveo with over 200,000 miles on it? Here it is! A hit a deer coming down my driveway and just straightened it out and spray painted black so it would not rust.

My 06 aveo was having same problem. I found a cracked vacuum line at the front of plastic plenum (dry rot). I replaced all the vacuum lines on front and back of plenum area. That fixed it and it runs better than ever.
That is common! Mine cracked as well, I could not find the original, so I took it Nappa and they matched it up with a rubber hose.
Thanks for reporting what fixed the idle.
I like to come back and add "SOLVED" to the thread title when people update us with a solution.
