need opinions on spark plugs
alright ive got 52,000 miles on my aveo so i think shes overdue for changing the spark plugs....need opinions on whats the best bang for your buck....im not look for a power adder but gettng more efficiency since I am going away to college but driving home every weekend to work....i was thinking between iridium or e3. has anyone tried both and which one was better performance and price wise. also do you recommend changing the wires too? thanks

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
From personal experience, I suggest NOT putting in Bosch Platinum Plus. They are not recommended, but according to some parts stores, they are listed as compatable. I did a tune up at 30,000 miles, and the wires ended up needing replacement as well (one of them broke while being removed). I put Bosch in...and began having problems. I'm still not positive whether or not the new wires and plugs were the cause, but can definitely tell a difference between the Bosch and the factory wires and plugs. By the way, the factory plugs are NGKs (Iridium, I believe). To prevent problems, I suggest sticking with these... they cost me $16 each at the dealer, but it's better than the time and money spent when problems begin to occur from putting in the wrong plugs.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
Iridium is the best out there right now. Best bang for the buck is a direct oem replacement at parts store. Why would GM skimp on plugs anyway? I'm pretty sure the engineers know what they are doing.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
IMO E3 ftl. was not impressed. its all your own choice.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
irridiums if you don't want to have to worry about your plugs for the rest of the life of the motor

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
Just started carrying the Pulstar Plugs... doubt anyone here could afford them though... I want to try them to see the hype, but at $25 A PLUG that's not worth it to me... Not even on the RB once I get it...

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
I use NGK's Iridium heat range 8 (BKR8EIX)..... they run great and lasted alot longer than regular coppers. My first set lasted about 30,000km before I started getting slight misfires. Replaced the plugs at about $8/plug and it runs great again. I don't recomend heat range 8 for non-turbo cars though, stick with the stock heat range which I think is 6.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
are the 8s supposed to be the "colder plug" deal?

Yes for NGK at least, the higher the number the colder the plug. So the 8's are 2 ranges colder than the stock ones.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
I was going to mention the Pulstar BE-1 plugs, but EXTREME 2 beat me to it. A buddy of mine (with a Honda Element-teeheehee- claims he's incogneto in it), said he noticed a big improvement in throttle response with them. At 25 bucks a pop, they better be giving a big increase in horsepower and torque, or the horsepower to dollar ratio would be going the wrong way. Stick with the NGK's. Ever think about bumping up to an 8.5 mm wire?
-
Re: need opinions on spark plugs
Those Pulstar plugs seem like a great idea, but they're really expensive to buy. I think I'm just going to stick with the NGK BKR6EIX plugs at $6 per plug.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
I just put in NGK Iridium's and they work great! I Highly recommend them.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
I just bought a set of Iridiums as well, im not sure if I want to wait until I can get new wires or if I should just go ahead and plug them in.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
TAKES 20 minutes to do the plugs. change them its easy,, then go back and change your wires when you get them, that'll take 10 minutes.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
Well i was checking out what the plugs looked like and i thought it was time to change them. here is a photo of just one of my plugs

Changed out the Wires Too. the Wires lookd like they where done and probley the OG Wires from 86,000 miles.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
I had used DENSO Iridum IK20 and NGK Iridium BKR6iex11.
Both are good. No significant difference. Used them for at least 40,000 km each.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
From what I have personally seen, the Pulstar plugs are ****. Here is a story from a local. His car is a cammed 02 Vette with a couple more mods.
Quote:
Well for those that remember. I convinced the makers of pulstar plugs to send me a free set. For my car that comes to $200.00 worth of plugs.. These plugs were suppose to crank up the spark.. increase compression and power..
I worked out a time to borrow the dyno at dynosport to run some test. What i had in my car going to the dyno were all Acdelco uraniums with about 4,000 miles on them.. THey are 100,000 mle plugs so i figured they were still good... at this point its giving the pulstars the advantage.. Well after doing some averaging.. it was concluded the pulstars increased power by 1hp and lost 1tq at the wheels over my used Acdelcos. I left them in to see if it would increase fuel econ. At first it seemed like i gained a couple mpg in town.. but after a few weeks that tappered off. I assume the difference wasn't the plugs but possibly gas/driving/enviroment and all the lil maintance i did before going like cleaning my maf.
Long story short.. they dont' work atleast not as advertised.. All the cars they test are stock... My car is no where near stock.. however considering the method they are suppose to work... there should be equal improvement on my car over a stock...
Welll it gets better. My car started acting up after the first snow storm... I kept thinking it was probably my 02's. They needed to be replaced but this didn't feel like 02s. although the rich smell and hte o2 codes said otherwise..
Well to get to my o2's i have to lower my headers. NOT an easy task... because of the way they drop i have to remove my sparkplugs... which means remove the pulstars... the first one came out just fine... looked just fine (color of the plug thats in the head) but that was the last one that came out that way.. every other one came out breaking... the ceramic coating that is... one was broken before i even put the socket over it. i had a hard time getting my socket over it.. because of the ceramic piieces laying underneither the plug on the head... so after strugglling for about 5 mins with it i finally go it off and it came out in peices.. just the top half everything inside the head was ok.. but this was obviously my problem.. So long story short they dont' work and are piles of ****.

Are you serious?
Whats the mpg difference?

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
A 5 year warranty seems kinda pointless if you're supposed to change them at 50,000km. I know it makes sense if you only drive your car 10,000km a year but that seems unrealistic.

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
I been getting help from this forum since i bought my AVEO a year ago. I have to thank all of you for the advise and information you guys have provided to save me from going to service department.
I just replaced 2005 AVEO 5 LT spark plug with brk6eix-11, after start the car, engine shake like crazy and engine light start flashing ? Any advise why this is happening. I have to say I did not check the spark plug gap and just installed it out the box. Somehow I assumed spark plug gap is pre-set for the AVEO 5.
Is the shaking/engine light flashing happening because of the gap if that is not set properly ?
Also I didnt only changes the spark plug but I also replaced the Valve Cover Gasket, (engine oil leak) is it possible engine shaking is happening because some thing went wrong with gasket installation ?
Any help will be appreciated.
-
Re: need opinions on spark plugs
flashing light indicates a current misfire.
so check everything you did, the condition of the wires (on might have been damaged in removal) and mist the coil pack to check for arching. Also did you lose any oil into the spark plug well when you did the valve cover gasket?
that would potentially cause the plug to ground out nit fire as well..

Re: need opinions on spark plugs
Slow day at work today, so I decided now was a better day then ever to replace my spark plugs. I ran out to the parts store quick and picked up some NGK Iridium IX's, pulled my car into the back of our warehouse, put them in. Initial start up was nice. I hope they work good. But to my point... I have a biased opinion to recommend NGK Iridium IX's since I just purchased them! He he. They were $20 for a set of two (they came in singles or doubles). So you'd be looking at $40 bucks for all four. Hope this helps!
